Owner description: Castle Rushen is one of the world’s most finely preserved medieval castles and can be found in the Isle of Man's former capital, Castletown. Once a royal palace, Castle Rushen was home to the Kings and Lords of Mann, with the Castle’s oldest part dating back to the time of Magnus, last Norse King of Mann. Later on, Castle Rushen served as an administrative centre, a mint, a law court and for over 100 years until the late 19th Century, as a prison. Today, spectacular displays illustrate the Castle at various times in history, with figures in period costume, historical furnishings and wall hangings, realistic food, contemporary music and medieval speech brining the Castle’s medieval and 17th Century periods to life. Also nearby in Castletown, you can also enjoy the Old House of Keys, the Nautical Museum and The Old Grammar School, whilst only a short drive away, the ancient ruins of Rushen Abbey can also be enjoyed.

Really helpful staff. Lovely old castle with lots to see and beautiful views. Well worth a visit. Mind you some of those staircases are a tad tight!

“Brilliant castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2014

This is a superb little castle with so much of it still in tact. I visited it when I was 6 years old and so 45 years later I wondered if I would still be as impressed by my powerful childhood memories of it. I wasn't disappointed. So many rooms and staircases to explore with interesting information boards. Great atmosphere about the place and the views from the battlements are pretty stunning.

“Capital castle”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2014

Castle Rushen is found in the ancient capital, Castletown. There are two ways to explore this imposing monument, with the more adventurous option being to take the spiral stone staircase to the roof.
This tortuous route brings you into numerous cells and rooms, each of which has an information plaque explaining its purpose.
The larger rooms have tableaux depicting activities that took place in the castle's heyday.
The important role that the castle and rulers played in the history of the island is brought to life.
Patience is needed to navigate your way around, as it's so easy to become disorientated. The friendly staff will soon point you in the right direction!

“Not to be missed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2014

An excellent visitor attraction; very informative display boards without being over-powering; fantastic views from the top; the second part of the visitor route gets even more interesting, so allow time; staff helpful. You need to negotiate the spiral staircases and you may struggle to find the entrance to the Castle, but it is worth the effort.

“A castle fit for a king”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2014

Come to Castletown by bus or the Steam Railway and you will find Castle Rushen in the centre of this small town, which was formerly the island's capital. Its origins lie in Viking times, with subsequent developments between the 13th and 16th centuries. As you explore the castle, you will come across a prison, interactive displays, and wonderful views from as you walk along the top of the castle walls. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
One downside is that if you have any trouble walking, you will find it very difficult to climb the spiral staircases. It would also benefit from a slight increase in lighting in some of the rooms.
