“Great Service - Good Value!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2012

I recently stayed at the Ellan Vannin as a solo, business traveller. The hotel is in an ideal location in Douglas just a short walk away from Lord Street Bus Station and the Sea Ferry Terminal. Paul and Pauline , the proprietors of the hotel, are warm and friendly and do their best to deliver a quality service. My room was small but comfortable and clean and it was a bonus having tea and coffee making facilities in the room. The breakfast was excellent and ample portions of quality food were dished out daily.Just a small gripe about the towel changing/cleaning service because some of the towels that I had used were not cleaned satisfactorily before I received them back. However,I thoroughly recommend a stay at the Ellan Vannin - you will not be disappointed!

This B&B is in a great location - espesically if your traveling by boat as it's only a 5min walk from the ferry terminal. The B&B is facing the prom/sea front and depending on what time of year your there, you can hop on the horse & tram which will bring you right down to the other end of the prom. The street behind the B&B is the main shopping street in Douglas and has TK Maxx, M&S, Boots, a couple of the main high street fashion shops as well as she local manx shops and souvenir shops.

A 5 minute walk in one direction will bring you past the ferry terminal and to the marina. There are some nice bars and restaurants around this area. The bus terminus for the island is in this area also. A 5 min walk in the oppisite direction will bring you down towards the manx heritage museum, gaeity theater and vila marina.

The B&B has a lot of steps and stairs and to the best of my knowledge doesn't have a lift. When we were there they did accommodate a family and an older guest on the 1st floor so they only had one set of stairs to climb but as I was on the 5th floor I had 5 - which wasn't a problem after the initial shock of nearly having a heart attack going up them!

The rooms are bright and efficient for a B&B. There was tea/coffee making facilities, tv, hair dryer, en-suite , fresh towels daily etc. The breakfast was freshly cooked to order and had everything from Manx Kippers to a regular full breakfast. The breakfast room is in a bright room (natural light) in the basement so again it's another set of stairs.

Over all this B&B has a great location, nice rooms and a good home cooked breakfast - what more can you ask for ?

Room Tip: There are only a limited number of sea view rooms so if you really want one, book early!

We had a fantastic stay at the Ellan Vannin and couldn't have asked for more. Great location, good rooms and very nice owners. We had some special requests which were all dealt with in an umcomplicated manner. We will certainly come back for another stay, next time a bit longer.

We have just returned from a short break at this fabulous little private hotel in a great location on Douglas' seafront. The new owners Paul and Pauline and staff are attentive without being intrusive - nothing is too much trouble, Our 2 rooms were fresh, well equipped having new furniture and beds, with recently refitted en-suite.

EXCELLENT GENEROUS BREAKFASTS!!! - and a super dinner thanks to Paul's excellent cooking.

iF you're looking for friendly comfortable reasonably priced accomodation ideally placed for touring the island (we used the 3 day rover ticket and the public transport is brilliant!), you will be very satisfied with this little gem.

Room Tip: If you want a sea view the front rooms have it all, but the trade off is that by definition you are...

We stayed three nights at the small inn and had a restful stay. We arrived on the last ferry of the evening, but the late arrival was no problem and we were warmly greeted. I will say that the hotel was a little difficult to find due to lack of street numbers on most of the buildings. The name is on the front, but on a somewhat small sign placed awkwardly. Keep an eye out for the fountain in the sunken gardens across the street; it's immediately in front of the hotel. The hotel is in a good location, not far from most things of interest in Douglas. Walking distance to the sea terminal and right on the promenade.
Our room was reasonably sized and clean. We had two windows facing in two directions, but no view through either of them (room was toward the back of the hotel). There is no a/c, but we didn't need it during our visit. There was a hairdryer and good water pressure in the shower. The temperature of the shower flucuated wildly though - cold to scalding. There's no elevator.
Breakfast was very good with several choices and a very friendly staff person waiting tables.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the front of the hotel. Probably great sea views.

I wrote a review a couple of years ago on our first visit, having found the Ellan Vannin very pleasant, but with some limitations. Since then it has been taken over by a couple who have really started to improve an already nice hotel. It has had work done in several areas and is now a fantastic place to stay. The owners are planning further upgrades, so I anticipate it will get even better. I am not surprised it is currently the No. 1 B&B in Douglas. Its status is well deserved.
