I had to travel to the Isle of Man for one day and found Gloucester House on TripAdvisor. I've stayed at all kinds of places for both work and leisure over the years but none have given me cause to reconstitute my TripAdvisor account to write a review, so here goes!
What you get is; a spacious apartment which on your first visit you will be shown around. After that, it's over to you. There's a kitchenette (with electric oven/stove, microwave, kettle), the usual suite paraphernalia, a dining table & chairs, sofa, a bed, shower, toilet and so on. You know the drill.
What makes this place stand out are all the little extras, the attention to detail. Upon arrival, as standard, there is your choice of fresh bread on the counter, with butter and jams, cereal & coffee, milk
Like most apartments, there is a room/guide book containing information on the local area, places to go, eat, things to see and do. But what makes this apartment special is that this book sits upon a desk, with comfortable chair, power points, wifi access and a complimentary PAYG mobile phone to use during your stay. A printer is available, and during certain daytime hours the reception is staffed and they are able to help you there (e.g. print your boarding pass for a return flight).
Access to the apartment is delivered via email or text message and it comprises of three separate access codes. Two for the front two doors and one for your apartment. Checking out is as simple as closing the door behind you when you leave.
They communicate effectively and clearly by email and as part of their standard service they will clean your room, restock your fridge/minibar a regular intervals throughout a week as well as offer additional chargeable services such as your collection from the airport, getting in some groceries for you and so on. The hotels weaknesses, the lack of an on-site gym and restaurant are covered too by an arrangement with discounted access to a local gym (which I didn't have time to try) and a local restaurant which also does a cooked breakfast. Or you can cook your own breakfast .. or make your own from the complimentary cereal, milk and bread and jam provided.
The owner is incredibly knowledgeable about the island and was very friendly and helpful (especially when the wifi router needed rebooting in the evening :P). The hotel appears to have almost every conceivable guest's need either already catered for or just a phone-call away. The duty manager lives in the building and is reachable by telephone, although I had no reason to call.
I always found parking on the Promenade to be easy and the two hours (8am till 6pm) with no return within two hours isn't a problem unless you're planning on sleeping in until the late morning on the most comfortable bed I've slept on in any hotel! Seagulls can be a little noisy at night if you have the window open.
In summary, it's a superb apartment. I couldn't wish for more and will be staying here again next month for a week's family holiday and I'll stay here for future meetings.
There is no reason to stay anywhere else.
Some apartments have water/city views, some don't. Some apartments are better for families (all...
