“Good value hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2012

Just returned from 5 day stay at Ocean View - It was a very pleasant hotel, all staff were very friendly and helpful. We pre-booked a sea view room which was huge with a fab view of the English channel, it was the hottest week of the year while we were there and it was lovely to sit out on the balcony. Food was ok and as previous reviewer said, we were never hungry. The indoor pool looked lovely (but we didnt use it due to hot weather & swimming in the sea!). There was a full size snooker room and also an indoor bowls room. The bed linen and towels were spotless and changed daily. The only small criticism is the shower - it was more of a trickle ! Def. in need of updating. The hotel is situated opposite the lift down to the beach but there is a walk nearby down a lot of steps that takes about 5 mins or a longer more gradual walk taking about 15 mins. It is quite hilly in Shanklin but that gives it the charm and scenic factor. The Olde Shanklin Village is beautiful - thatched cottages, lovely restaurants & bars and cute tea rooms. We loved it and would defiantly go back.

We have just returned from a 5 day stay at this hotel. Having read some of the Reviews on this site, we decided to book the sea view rooms. A very good choice from all accounts!! Didn't cost a lot more either.

The hotel is a bit dated but I have seen much worse coaching hotels in my time. A warm reception met us and the booking in proceedure was very efficient. Our room was light and airy with comfortable beds that had some spotless bed linen on them. As it weas a sea view room we also got a balcony with a couple of plastic chairs. Our stay coincided with the hottest, sunniest week of the year so far, so the balcony was certainly a bonus!! The bathroom was adequate, with clean towels every day.

The restaurant was large but had enough staff. Personally I don't like ordering my evening meal whilst having my egg and bacon, but I can understand why they do it. This method not only stops some food waste, but makes the service in the evening more efficient. The food quality was adequate but don't expect gourmet meals as you are not paying gourmet prices. We never came away from the dining room hungry. The choces were good and the food always hot. Tea or coffee in the lounge afterwards.

We didn't go to the entertainment as the weather was too good to miss even in the evenings. If you enjoy your holiday Bingo fix you can get it every night about 8.30.

On the whole, a value for money hotel that I would cetainly stay at again. Enjoy!!

Room Tip: Sea view is best.

We went with a party of friends on a 6 day trip with Robinsons.

For what we paid, our expectations were well met. One of our party did have a problem with their room and they were soon relocated to their satisfaction.

Bearing in mind all that is offered, this represented good value.

The meals were very acceptable and we were fortunate to se served by a young Bulgarian gentleman called 'Mike". He was friendly, courteous and professional.

This is a good hotel on a lovely island

Room Tip: As the title says..."go with an open mind!"

this hotel is addictive i have been there three times in summer just returned this weekend and twice for Christmas third one coming.
what can i say that has not been said before.
great welcome from maria and help with luggage nice room overlooking English channel you could not get a better view quite location wonderful view, very clean nicely furnished.
how they do the nice meals for the money i do not know 4 courses, yes you choose at brekfast for evening so less waist so better food as far less waist.
1veg, 2meat,1 fish and varied salad selection every night so good choice.and all waiter service no buffet proper tablecloths it feels nice so many hotels now buffet,no long waiting.
light lunches available in bar,and even do packed lunches or sandwiches at very reasonable cost.
evening entertainment varied in ballroom and quite card room if want to be away from entertainment.
and shanklin though hilly is a nice setting and the lift down the cliff to the beach is just out side grounds and runs early to late.
you will enjoy the hotel but be warned be prepared to be hooked

Room Tip: seaviewnrooms our the best views the back our nice room but look out on to road

stayed here 8 nights on a coach trip but wished we hadn't the room was smelly and musty, the bathroom was a disgrace, the taps were caked in limescale and was fearful of cleaning my teeth from the water that came out of them. We also had no hot water for 2 days.when we asked to change rooms was told there was none available. couldn't wait to come home again.

Room Tip: dont think there are any good rooms, the whole hotel needs a lot of money spending on it.

Having previously booked hotel deals through Travelzoo and having found the quality to be consistently excellent, we were very disappointed in this similar deal from KGB Deals.

Our room was very tired looking, with a particularly lurid-coloured and slightly damp smelling bathroom and parking lot views. Breakfast and dinner were included in the deal, but having arrived late we were informed we’d missed our 6.30pm slot for dinner. Having seen the food on offer and subsequently ‘enjoying’ breakfast the next morning, this was not necessarily a bad thing. I (accidentally) mistook the fruit and juice laid out on a big table for a help-yourself buffet and was told in no uncertain terms that it was not help yourself and we should wait for service. I wish we had left at that point, as what we were served was, quite frankly, dire. Clearly they were catering for large groups and therefore preparing the breakfasts en masse, but literally everything on our plate had been nuked, and don’t get me started on the smiley-face hash browns… The couple next to us actually complained about their rock-hard poached eggs, only to be given exactly the same again, leading to an exchange of wry smiles (possibly the highlight of our stay).

Despite having booked the deal for two nights, we checked out shortly after breakfast, as we couldn’t face another night there.

From a fairness point of view, I should mention that we clearly weren’t the target guests for this hotel, as the prominent chair lifts and (literally) coachloads of pensioners made clear, and it was also a relatively cheap deal - so I guess the old ‘pay peanuts..’ adage applies. Lesson learned for next time...

Room Tip: If you insist on staying here, you should aks for a seaview room. Ours faced the parking lot...

With just 3 weeks to go to our sea view hotel room we received a telephone call to say that due to a double booking with a coach party they had to cancel our booking! At least they offered to book us into another hotel so we at least had our holiday. We had stayed at the Ocean View Hotel before but the hotel they booked us into was so much better and we will be going back there in future.
