Last year as part of the Isle of Wight Scooter Rally we stayed at the hotel next door to the Appley, the Hambledon. As we couldnt book the Hambledon, Bill the owner recommended his neighbours hotel, the Appley which I hadnt used before. On arrival we were greeted by Rod and Wendy the owners and made very welcome. Parking was available for our scooters, and two other scootering couples were staying there too. This hotel is spotlessly clean, i mean really spotless. The rooms are great, the water hot in shower, the decor nice, the breakfast great, quick and efficient. What you get with this hotel is a perfect location for Shanklin. The beach is just around the corner, with access by walking path or for those who have difficulty walking a beach lift. If you head up the road to the right you come into Old Shanklin, plenty of pubs, cafes, tea rooms, gift shops, family friendly restaurants and pubs (The Crab is good, cheap pub food). If you go across the road from the Appley and turn right you are in Shanklin High Street, plenty of shops and walking distance to train station and bus station. A return ticket from Shanklin to Ryde is £4.00 (cheaper in the evening) and with this ticket you can get on and off at Sandown, Brading etc. So at the Appley, you are very well situated to what ever takes your fancy, the beach, the town, the old town or railhopper off to other towns on the cheap. One thing that was great is that the Appley is very quiet at night, so you will get a good nights sleep, its not near the main road and all rooms have double glazing to shut out noise, the only noise you might hear are the seagulls indicating you are close to the beach. I therefore give this hotel five star rating, its great value and well run and importantly its friendly. Would use again and recommend it. Malc and Shaun the scooterists.
