We dined here last night with another couple. The restaurant squeezed us in early evening as they were fully booked. Initial impressions were not particularly favourable as we were sat in the 'shop window' with hardly any other diners in the restaurant and service not particularly swift even so. However things improved as the restaurant got into full swing for a Saturday evening.
We chose from the specials and bistro menu as the dinner menu is not available until 7pm. Even so we were able to mix and match and there was a reasonable selection of dishes on offer. We chose the mushrooms on toast and poached pear and blue cheese starters and they were attractively presented and tasty and we were anticipating our mains. These arrived as the restaurant began to get busier and a little more atmospheric. Choices were scampi, pork belly and a sea bass special with saffron mash and wilted spinach. Everyone enjoyed their main courses with the pork belly being rated highly and portions were good with the possible exception of the sea bass: a little on the small side.
We all opted for a sweet with selections of chocolate pave, lemon posset and the cheese board, the latter with house made fig chutney, which went down very well, with tea and coffee to follow. If anything the restaurant could do with a few more sweet options on the menu.
Altogether with a decent bottle of red the total was over £100 which was considered good value for the quality of food and starters, mains and sweets for four people. Maybe not a venue for a special occasion or romantic meal but well worth a visit for a Saturday evening with friends. In the end an enjoyable meal with good service and we would definitely return to sample the dinner menu. I hope you find this review helpful.
