“Condescending Manager”

I booked a couple of nights away with my girlfriend for our anniversary. We had been looking forward to this and was impressed with the look of the hotel from the website.
We were pleased with the room and the location of the hotel, apart from the limited sea view as it was facing another building instead of the sea.
Unfortunately whilst using the flush on the toilet the button on the toilet sprung off and was flushed. We went to tell Piers the manager but he was occupied with another guest who turned out to be a hotel grader. On our return from a day out we went to our room to drop our things off and then to talk to Piers about the situation, but before we got a chance to he came to our room to question us about it.
My girlfriend explained what happened but he seemed less than believing in her explanation which made things awkward and said it would cost us £15 to replace it. We understood that we should pay for damages and agree with this as we are mature adults but feel aggrieved as ultimately it was a faulty appliance.
The following morning when we were due to depart I was going to bring up the situation, but Piers said that he didn't want to leave on bad terms and offered to pay half of the price (£7.50). We felt like we had to pay this compromised price as it was an uncomfortable situation and wanted to leave.
Aswell as this to make things alot worse as we were ready to leave with our bags, he spoke to us like children getting told off which we found patronising and condescending. He said "don't take this the wrong way but in the interests of hygiene, I always put the toilet seat down before I flush as when the water hits whatever you are flushing, thousands of particles dissipate into the air. As you are aware the toilet faces the sink in which your toothbrushes are kept and do i need to say anymore?".
This is not how people our age should be spoken to especially as we are guests and paid good money to stay there.
Unfortunately, our two days memories of Paignton are of this altercation which spoiled our holiday. We have stayed in other 4 star hotels (Paris and Edinburgh) and have not been treated this way before.

My girlfriend booked this b&b for us to stay in as it was her Nan’s birthday and many of her family were going to be in Paignton. The hotel was very clean and had a decent breakfast. The bedroom and bathroom were immaculate and the shower was very powerful. We had upgraded so we got a suite with the Sauna and as part of the upgrade got breakfast in bed which was a good touch. It also allowed us a late check out of 11am rather than 10am.

On various review sites the overall impression of the website is good, but we did read some things that made us raise an eye brow about the owner contacting people who had left unfavourable reviews. We decided to ignore these and book anyway.

The owner, Piers, was an unusual chap whose greeting left us bemused to say the least. We told Piers on check in that 2 other couples we knew would be staying at the hotel and he said nothing to us about this. We had read the list of rules and regulations at this point but he made us read them again if front of him as if we were back at school! He gave us the breakfast list and asked when we would like breakfast, we said 9.30 but he then said it had to be served between 8&9 (why he couldn't state this before asking was beyond us). When another of our party checked in later he had said that he wouldn't have allowed a group booking! Piers still allowed us to stay though. There was also a £1 charge for removing bottles from the bins. I could go on.

We are a young professional couple who have travelled around the world but we have yet to experience anything like this.

He has since contacted another member of our party that has left a review that was unfavourable and claimed that we had booked as a group (although he doesn't accept group bookings so he broke his own rules) and tried to bring non-guests into the hotel, which is a lie. The fact that the details are passed onto Piers is also shocking.

Overall if you are planning on going to Paignton this is a very clean hotel in a good location with decent facilities. However I couldn't recommend this hotel based on our experience with the owner who made us feel very unwelcome.

We are a 29/ 30 year old couple who were visiting Paignton to attend my Grandmother's 80th birthday party. We don't smoke and are both responsible adults who spend at least one weekend a month in a hotel. I have personally been visiting Paignton my whole life and choose this B&B as it looked clean and new on the website and for its close proximity to the party venue and the sea.

The B&B itself lived up to all expectations. We had upgraded to a room with it's own private sauna, extended check out and breakfast in bed. The room was very big, clean, newly decorated and the sauna just about fit the pair of us in. It could not have been in a better location either, just behind one of our favourite pubs, The Spinning Wheel.

However, the owner/ manager, Piers, spoiled our whole experience in staying at this place. From walking in we were hit with a set of rules and treated like children. We had to order our breakfast on arrival and do it in a certain order(?), we were taught how to unlock a door and put a latch on before even getting to see our room, not great when you are adults and had just had a long journey. We were then shown how to turn lights and the sauna on. There is no licenced bar, just one bottle of beer on sale, and drinking your own drinks were at the price of £1 (for Piers to clear the bottle/ can). Glasses with ice were 50p.

Everytime we left our room Piers was in the corridor which added to the tension and made us feel like we were doing something wrong.

My Brother & Cousin and their girlfriends (all also mature) had also booked into this hotel. The booked through third parties and were not told about no groups being allowed. However the owner made this clear to us when we arrived. We were barely a group, just family members staying for a family occasion. We were not allowed to go into each others rooms and everytime we moved in the corridor (to pass on the iron, say hello) Piers was there asking us what we were doing.

Breakfast was good but with very small portions (on our second day we were served a quarter of tomato on our plate?), and could only be served between 8 and 9am, even on weekends.

Whilst the Cosmopolitian is a nice place and Piers obviously wants to keep it that way it does not provide for a relaxing, and certainly not fun, weekend. People who have commented on friendly staff must have had others, we only saw Piers the whole weekend. At £170 for 2 nights this B & B is probably the most expensive and does not offer the "fun" element that a typical seaside establishment should have. You will spend the whole time on edge, tip toeing around and whispering. I am only glad we had not booked a week here.

I wasn't going to write a review but on hearing that Piers had contacted people threatening to sue them (including my cousin)for negative comments I felt I had to. If I do receive any such emails I will report them on this site.

We welcome the opportunity of clarifying our service standards and procedures:

1) When guests check in we ask them to register, as required by law, and since the registration form also forms a contract between The Cosmopolitan and the guest, we do suggest that they read what they are signing.
2) We show guests how to operate both security doors in order that they may come and go as they please during their stay.
3) In the case of Room 2, because breakfast is served in the room, we ask guests what they would like and at what time, during the check in procedure.
4) We do not advertise that we have a bar, therefore the fact that we haven't shouldn't have come as a surprise to this reviewer.
5) Piers will often be found wallking through the corridors because he lives and works on the premises.
6) Guests are allowed into each others rooms. However, the sauna in Room 2 is for the exclusive use of the registered guests in Room 2.
7) Piers categorically denies asking these guests what they were doing. He may in a futile attempt to create conversation have asked what plans they had during their stay.
8) We advertise that breakfast is served between 8 and 9am. This should therefore not have come as a surprise to this reviewer.
9) Generally, Piers is the friendly pleasant person that other people comment on. However there will always be people that don't find him so and in most of these cases the feeling is mutual.
10) Piers did not threaten to sue this person's cousin.
11) Piers is responsible for the health and safety and security of ALL guests during their stay at The Cosmopolitan and the rules that this reviewer dislikes so much are there to ensure that he achieves his legal obligations. Guests who flout the rules are not welcome.

I hope that this explains a little of the background to The Cosmopolitan's service.

We stayed in this hotel in May and was pleasantly surprised by the interior of the property as it does not look all that from the outside. Howeve on the inisde it was clean and quite good standard. Breakfast was decent as well. On the negative side was Paignton itself which is not the best and Piers the owner. He is indeed very peculiar and whilst he does try to help, his jokes are misplaced and he comes across as very awkward and slightly rude.

Our friends were staying there at the same time and had booked through a hotel website. When they left a slightly disfavourable review, he managed to get their private e-mail off the hotel website and asked them to retract their review otherwise he would sue them. Frankly I found it shocking both in terms of the hotel booking webiste giving out private e-mail adresses and Piers's attitude. And for that reason I can not recommend this place I am afraid.

I'd like to thank this reviewer for her kind comments about our establishment.

When she says we "don't look all that" from the outside what she means of course, is that the property is deceptively spacious.

And naturally she has such high personal standards that her praise of our cleanliness, furnishings and breakfasts means that we must be good!

As regards the personal comments about me, well, she is quite correct. I am eccentric/peculiar (I have personality), my jokes are misplaced on occasion ( at least I have a sense of humour), and I may on occasion come across as slightly rude to people for whom English may be a challenge.

Of course I'd like everyone who visits The Cosmopolitan to love me and love the property and what we've created here, but I'm realistic enough to know that that is just a dream.

I'll settle for customers who appreciate high standards and want a bit of personality in the process.

This is probably the finest B&B I have stayed in during my 30 years on the road. The welcome was extremely warm and friendly not over the top,you were left alone to get on with your much needed rest. With regards to the smoking issue you are made aware of this before you walk through the door and as with the now national smoking ban imposed by this Government you dont have a choice. The decor is fresh clean and stylish this is not your run of the mill B&B breakfast was ample and prompt. Make a visit and relax before the word gets around.

Very clean hotel the nicest we have stayed in. Piers the owner or manager whatever he is was the rudest most arrogant man ive ever met. He was very unwelcoming and treated us like kids.

Would recomend the hotel but not with Piers still there

The Cosmopolitan provides quality accommodation for discerning guests who respect our high standards.
Unfortunately a member of this reviewer's group illegally smoked in their room during their stay.
We are a 100% non-smoking establishment. Smokers who respect the law, and the policies of The Cosmopolitan, are welcome. Those who do not, are not.

Stayed at the Cosmpolitan for a night, and will quite happily stay there again. The owners, Piers and Miki, were wonderful hosts. They really couldn't do enough for their guests. The Hotel itself stands out amongst the other B&B's along the frontline, due to its clean, crisp appearance, which is always a welcoming sign. Inside is no different. The interior is decorated to a very high standard, in neutral calming shades. The bedrooms are furnished with good quality furniture and linens. Nothing has been forgotten in this B&B, which makes a lovely change. Breakfast is a lovely selection of fruit, cereals and cooked breakfasts, be it Full English or something lighter. Miki cooks a mean brekkie (as my husband commented!). Thank-you for being our hosts, hope to see you again soon.
