“Decent place for short stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013 via mobile

Stayed in the family room which was spacious, if a little tired looking in appearance and bathroom could do with a bit of updating. However double bed was very comfortable and room had a decent sized tv and tea/coffee facilities. Creaking floorboards in the room above and in the reception area were a bit annoying early morning.

The breakfast room was light and airy, and the food on offer was well presented and very tasty. Also the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Farnley Towers has a great position with views over the town, but it is a steep walk down and back up again to get to the main places to visit and eat/drink. Found a good pub in the town which served decent pub food, The Court Inn, quite near the police station.

Two night stay. First the good points. Spacious room(12) with fine view of cathedral and a King size, comfortable bed but the bathroom was small and scruffy and in need of renovation. Food in the gourmet restaurant was superb and the service excellent but the choice was very limited. Breakfast was outstanding and freshly prepared. Now the less than good points. There was no residents' lounge and the reception area was disappointing and at the time of check out a little reminiscent of Fawlty Towers . The establishment is not near the city centre and at the top of a hill which makes going out to eat less than appealing in the snow which fell during our stay. Farnley Tower in my opinion would be better described as a restaurant with rooms rather than a hotel given the lack of some of the things mentioned above

Room Tip: Rooms 11 and 12 offer good views

I booked this as a stay for mine and my partners anniversary, I stated this on the booking form and on arrival had been awarded with a spacious room overlooking Durham city! Perfect! Beds are lovely and comfortable, perfect for a good nights sleep. Ate out the first night but then treated ourselves to the hotels gourmet restaurant on the second night, what a beautiful meal, only downside was this was a little too "posh" for us as a young couple, we paid for 3 courses but actually ended up getting 7! Amazing! Staff at breakfast were lovely and attentive and check in was quick and easy, just what you need when you just want to get to your room and chill out. Only downside was a slightly grubby grouting in the room and the hotel cat....only because I was allergic. Would definitely return. Thank you staff at farnley tower! :)

Lovely views over Durham city. don't expect roll top baths and luxury toiletries, or for it to be set in a vast country house estate because you will be disappointed, however, it is clean and warm with tidy décor. Breakfast was decent in a very pleasant room the bed was comfy and staff were welcoming.

This was my second visit and I really appreciated the customer service. When I checked in there was an immediate apology about the lack of TV and I was offered an immediate and generous reduction. Much appreciated! The rooms are furnished country house style and are cosy and welcoming. It's not a luxury boutique hotel but has a feel of quality best demonstrated in the white breakfast room - which actually is quite boutique! - which serves up one of the best a la carte breakfasts I have had. This is care and service, quality and value delivered with friendliness and efficiency. Non-chain establishments like this deserve our support! One thing - I don't have a car so the walk is quite steep up the hill from the city centre - but I need the exercise!

Stayed on a cold night in January. Very good value for money at 48 pounds for Bed and Breakfast. Large Room with good quality Double Bed (Room 8) and well appointed. Warm, good TV and plenty of space. Bathroom a little jaded, but perfectly adequate and good supply of hot water and towels.

No downstairs sitting room --- this is much more a restaurant with rooms but the rooms are certainly of a high standard.

Cooked breakfast in the morning was freshly cooked but quickly delivered and of excellent quality. Service throughout in the morning and on departure was friendly and efficient. On arrival, the previous evening, it seemed a little hurried and not particularly welcoming. When you have driven nearly 350 miles you would like a little more of a welcome. But its a tiny niggle in what was a very good experience and a splendid price.

Room Tip: Room 8 was large, double-aspect, comfortable and warm.
