Owner description: Durham Castle is unique building with 900 years of living history. Today not only is it a Grade I Listed Building, a Museum but it is also the home to University College, the founding College of Durham University and over 100 students are resident during term. The unique nature of the building means that, entrance to the public is by guided tours only. However, this allows a personal experience that brings history to life. The following tour times are a general guide as it is sometimes necessary to cancel tours at short notice due to University or commercial activities. During term-time: every afternoon at 1.15P,, 2.15Pm, 3.15Pm and 4.15Pm.During university vacations: daily 10.15Am, 11.15Am, 12.15Am, 1.15Pm, 2.15Pm, 3.15Pm and 4pm. Please check the tour times with Palace Green Library or the World Heritage Site Visitor Centre to avoid disappointment.

“A working castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2013

The castle is home to the university during the academic year. Visitors are allowed to visit by way of a guided tour given by one of the students. The guide we had was excellent as he went into detail through the history and insights into the student live at the castle. For Harry Potter fans there is the magnificent dinning hall where Hogwarts was filmed. Highly recommend a visit while in Durham.

“very Interesting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2013

We had a fascinating tour of the castle, which is part of the University, given by a third year student. She was so competent in her knowledge of the history of the castle and had a loud, clear voice. It really was excellent and well worth a visit.

“Great tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2013

Well organised tour around parts of the castle. The group numbers are limited, mainly because parts of the building are occupied by current students. Everything has a fascinating history and the guide was a student who was keen to share his enthusiasm for the building.

“interesting tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2013

This is a really lovely place to visit. You have to book on to tour usually every hour on the hour. Cost 5 pounds. Our young lady tour guide was very informative about the history of the castle worth a visit.

“Cold and Old”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2013

It was a lovely old castle with plenty to view and see. Not a lot of amenities however, such as coffee shops, boutiques and spa ect.
