Stayed three nights last week. This is an old hotel so I wasn't expecting modern glitz. The room was fine - reasonably furnished although a little gloomy, but the windows are small so this should be expected. The bed was first class - very comfortable, and the room was warm enough without being stuffy. The bathroom was adequate but there was a lot of grime and mildew in the grouting around the bath. If you tried to run hot water too late you didn't get any - perhaps the system can't cope with demand. The dining room was a disaster. First evening had roast? lamb - totally tasteless. The service was poor - I waited fifteen minutes for some cheese and gave up. Breakfast was the unfortunately 'normal' array of steaming dishes with lids containing bacon, sausage and other things which didn't benefit from being steamed. I chose the 'light' alternative - chorizo, edam, smoked ham and tomato salad. It was fine except for the absence of chorizo, edam, smoked ham and tomato salad. The substitutes weren't good. A mixed grill that evening was pretty poor so that on the third evening I ate out, even though I was on half board terms. The rate I got was very good and almost, but not quite, worth the poor food and service in the restaurant. I left a comments sheet but haven't heard anything. Not once, including check out was I asked how things were.

This Hotel is bang in the middle of Durham next to all the pubs shops etc the Hotel food and accommodation is very good for a Hotel at this price.I had a very comfortable stay the weekend I stayed there,it got a bit noisy after twelve as we were in a room at the front facing the main thoroughfare, this has to be expected as the town is full of students, I would return to this Hotel again as the standard of food and service was excellent

“Hotel meets Whitehall farce: A real shame.”

Three Tuns Hotel

Nov 8, 2007

This hotel could be excellent if the chain that owned it spent a reasonable amount of money on its upkeep. At best, the state of the building was shabby. After showing myself to my room I had to telephone reception to ask whether any rooms were available without the wall paper peeling from the ceiling and mould in the bathroom. When the manager came to move me to another room I was told that I clearly did not understand that "the building is very old". Period properties don't always equate to dilapidated decor. The next room was better as the wallpaper had only managed to loosen itself in patches.

At breakfast I was cheered to see eggs benedict on the menu. What was delivered was poached eggs on fried bread bathed in hollandaise. When I enquired about the the omission of the bacon the waiter said that they made this dish rarely, implying that the kitchen had little idea about its constituent ingredients.

There are many better hotels in Durham.

Interior is rather "tired". Definitely in need of a redec/refurb. However, plenty of hot water and nice touches like fresh milk in the room fridge. Breakfast good but coffee poor. Don't have an evening meal, very basic cuisine, portions far too big (it's a northern thing) with zero subtlety.
Rooms facing New Elvet very noisy if you leave the window open which is a requirement due to the over-heated interior!
Free car parking a boon in Durham and location excellent for historic centre. Use of the swimming pool/fitness suite at the very nearby Mariott Hotel also a big plus.
Staff very friendly and helpful. All they have to do is sort out the gloomy ground floor bar and restaurant, get a new chef and it'll be a super city centre hotel.

Stayed in the Three Tuns on yje bank holiday weekend and had an excellent deal of £118 for 2 for 2 nights B&B.

Pros
Excellent position for Durham City, rooms large and bathrooms had plenty of hot water.
Tea & Coffee facilities provided together with a bottle of water
Fan, iron, trouser press and ironing board, plus fan geater all provided. Seemed to have every weather catered for
Helpful and friendly reception with quick check in
You can use leisure facilities of Marriott hotel or free

Cons
On both mornings something was missing from the breakfast as they had run out, Bacon, black puddings and baked beans were missing both mornings on a number of breakfasts and when queried we were advised they has run out!! How much effort is it to open another tin?
Service at breakfast okay but not great
Bar closes early so not open for a residents late drink even when it was only midnight
There are a lot of steps therefore if you have mobility issues (none of my party did) xhoose another hotel

Durham is a beautiful city with reasonable food and drink options. It helped the weekend we were there the weather was glorious and you could sit at the side of the river and watch the world go by

Would visit again if I could get the same deal in the hotel because of its location
