“Good location.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

This hotel has an excellent location in the centre of Durham. We arrived early and our room was ready which was a bonus. Our room was on the second floor but the elevator was out of order during our stay. The room itself was relatively spacious and clean but nothing special. The hotel is showing its age with garish carpets, sloping corridors and terrible creaking floorboards.
We chose to have breakfast in our room and it was very good.
The car park is small and may be used by non-residents so it is difficult to get a space.
We did not eat in the restaurant or use the pool so I cannot comment.
This was fine for a one night stay but it would not be my choice for future stays in Durham.

Room Tip: Try to get a room in the newer part of the hotel.

The hotel is perfectly located for all the attractions within the city of Durham. The hotel has been in existence many years and the old part of the hotel certainly shows it, with a labyrinth of narrow hallways with creaking sloping floors. The room we had was well furnished but small and a bit cramped. There were windows but no view whatsoever. The bathroom was excellent. There was a fridge in the room but it did not function, and the attention to details on servicing the room was not quite up to scratch.(missing tissues, missing coffee etc). The elevator was out of action during our weekend stay. Breakfast was good, and the staff were very helpful. I would use the hotel again but it would not be my first choice.
The hotel has a spa but we did not use it so unable to comment.

Room Tip: The standard rooms are a bit cramped, okay for a day or two but a bigger room would be recommended f...

Great staff, could do with refurbishment, food hit and miss. Location fantastic.
Biggest drawback they have engaged a Car Park company the like of which consumer programmes warn about - very agressive and inflexible policy - even for residents and diners. Watch out unless you want to pay more for car park fine than the room. I would have the given the Hotel a higher rating if it was not for this.

A while ago, there were beautiful sofas near the entrance, and in the lounges. They were in beautiful fabrics with bright modern cushions. This made not only a welcome, but also made you feel that you were in a hotel that was a "cut above others" - the design had impact.
Oh dear .......................... these have all been removed, and replaced by mostly chairs in the same muddy, uninteresting colour. WHAT A SHAME. It's no longer welcoming and smart.

This was our first stay in a Marriott and it won't be our last, hopefully. This was arranged via Superbreaks as we had tickets for a concert in the Cathedral and spotted their advert re the Durham Marriott. Location is excellent-short walk into city centre, yet minimal traffic noise. Friendly and welcoming staff; comfortable, spacious room; good choice of breakfast items, hot & cold. Have no negative comment to make so recommend without hesitation.

We stayed here for a night for a friends birthday party in Durham. The hotel is really well placed to explore Durham, being virtually at the start of the walk up to the Castle, cathedral and main shops. It's also easy to get to off the main roads into Durham, so handy for access as well.

Parking is interesting though, the car park costs £5 a night and was extremely busy when we stayed. We got the last space in the car park, so my advice is to arrive earlier rather than later to ensure a space. It's also pretty tight, so the larger your car the more fun getting into a space! You can put a ticket in the car and stay after the check out time on the day you leave if you wish, or park in one of the other car parks in Durham.

The hotel felt cosy and the staff were extremely helpful. The rooms are a little on the small side, but well appointed and the bathroom is excellent with a good shower. The beds are also comfortable and with a relatively firm mattress, and we had no noise issues when we stayed.

We ordered room service for a snack before we went out for the evening, and the quality of the food and speed of service was excellent. Breakfast was also extremely good, with a variety of options including the traditional full English buffet.

All in all an excellent location in Durham, and a great hotel to opt for, especially given how close it is to the centre. Just arrive early enough to get the car parked.

Many other reviewers point to the fabric of the hotel needing to be spruced up in order to receive five-out-of-five ... and they're right. The staff are very, very helpful and thoroughly professional and as a result, there is a very nice atmosphere in the hotel. Service is efficient and effective in all areas, from check-in to bar and restaurant, and they go that little 'extra mile' that makes a stay so pleasant. The bed we slept on was huge and very comfortable and the room was clean -
although
those who sleep lightly may wish to take ear-plugs as the doors of many rooms close rather noisily. Car parking was good with a charge of 5 pounds per night. The hotel is located very close to the centre yet is not too noisy at night from trafiic and passers-by. Breakfast was pretty good - I would prefer the coffee to be stronger and bacon to be grilled, but it was perfectly palatable.
