“Fantastic few days”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2012

From the moment we drove into the courtyard the sense of history and grandeur was obvious. We stayed in room 60 which was a good walk from the reception but well worth it. Fantastic views over the valley and very peaceful even on Friday night when the banquet was taking place. All staff were so helpful and professional but without being over bearing.
Food in the Black Knight restaurant was excellent where te variety and quality were excellent. The use of the Northumbria lounge was a very pleasant addition and we sat in there both afternoons reading and relaxing. Food is served in there too. Well worth the upgrade to one of the themed rooms and we will definitely return.

Room Tip: Ask for a themed room, especially where you go through the wardrobe into the bathroom.

Stayed on a romantic break with my husband and couldn't have been more impressed. We stayed in a castle room which was beautiful and everything you would expect from a castle very in keeping. Had our evening meal in the black knight restaurant which was gorgeous, staff were very professional but nothing compared to the staff at breakfast, made us feel welcome and at home as soon as we stepped into restaurant. A lovely girl dressed in full Victorian wench wear sat us, all the staff made extra effort with everyone in restaurant even though they were all rushed off there feet. Brilliant castle with the best staff would recommend anyone to visit.

I had a business luncheon at the restaurant in the Castle and we were both very impressed with the variety of the menu and quality of the meal. We chose pate and soup for the starters and then the roast of the day (Turkey) and pan fried salmon wrapped in bacon for the main course, followed by cheese and biscuits and a vanilla cheesecake with a huge pile of warm juicy blueberries. Then came a choice of tea or coffee with mints. The service was impeccable - not too hurried as they knew we were having a meeting over lunch and they did not pester us to leave when we had finished. The special offer was 2 lunches for £35 which we felt was very reasonable for this quality of food, especially given the wonderful setting of the castle. The castle itself is very impressive and nice to have a stroll in the grounds to walk off the amazing food! Definitely will be back again!

We stayed here for my friends' wedding in July - the setting was amazing. The rooms were wonderful and the restaurant food delicious! The wedding breakfast was delicious with a sumptious hog roast! 10/10!
The only (slight) complaint would be our bathroom - the glass shower pane wasnt properly sealed to the bath so when we were in the shower the whole place flooded. We did get moved room eventually but this was on the morning of the wedding so everything was a bit rushed.
I would recommend this place for a romantic weekend away - if you have the spare pennies as it is quite pricey!! It is stunning, really gets love in the air ;-)

Just returned from a weekend break at this lovely hotel.
Had a room in the main castle which was in keeping with the style of the building, slightly sloping floor with pictures on the walls at a slight angle, only thing missing was a ghost!!
Bathroom also fitted out with traditional sanitary fittings behind a concealed panel in the wall.
Service from staff, who dress in period costume, was excellent and the food was of a very high standard.
Beware that to reach some of the rooms in the castle you may have to climb some steep stone steps that are not good for the elderly or infirm, however this all adds to flavour of staying in a traditional castle.
The main castle is full of may passageways and different function rooms and is a real maze.
During our stay there were two wedding receptions and a haunted evening event underway, neither of which interfered with our stay.

Room Tip: Go for a room in the Castle but ensure that it is one that can be easily reached if you have mobilit...

We first stayed at Lumley Castle 9 years ago, and this one-night stay was a little reminiscence for us. A lot was familiar, some things have changed - like the branded in-room toiletries that have disappeared over the time - but overall it is still a great place to stay for something a little different from the corporate norm. We stayed in the room with the Narnia bathroom (50) this time around - the view is much better, though, from,a room at the front of the castle, looking over the riverside.
Good: Lovely friendly staff, really unusual room which was very much in keeping with the theme of the Castle, lovely squishy comfy 4-poster bed, the novelty of getting to the bathroom through the wardrobe, nice big shower head, free wifi (surely not in keeping with a mediaeval castle, but very handy, just the same!)
Not so good: Full English breakfast was not very nice - over-cooked and dry. Having said this, there was a huge selection of breakfast buffet items - fruit, pastries, yoghurt etc. - so maybe I should've stuck to the healthier options!
Now, I know it's a mediaeval castle, but is one bright light in the bathroom suitable for putting on make-up too much to ask...?
I also wonder if they've got the staffing right... there seemed to be huge number of spare serving people in the restaurant for breakfast, but when I rang to book the room it seemed only one person was able to deal with the booking and she was on the phone. When we arrived, the porter who was supposed to be coming to show us to our room had not arrived after some time waiting... but these are minor things.
The first time we went, back in 2003, it was a bit of a novelty to be greeted by a woman in full mediaeval costume - and we were there for one of their mediaeval banquets. This time, I thought the costumes seemed a bit tired and silly - and it appears it's only the female staff that have to wear them! The men wear normal 21st century trousers and waistcoats. Maybe time to update that a bit...?
Anyway, all in all it was a good stay and a great bit of fun - and it's certainly a bit different. You do feel very much as if you've stepped back in time and are enjoying the luxuries of olden times.

Room Tip: Room 50 has the Narnia bathroom (there may be others) but the first time we stayed there we had roo...

We've stayed twice at Lumley Castle. The first in a castle feature room and the second in a courtyard room. We really enjoyed both our stays and will certainly be going again. The staff are incredibly friendly and the food is great, with a lovely choice on both continental and cooked breakfast options.

If there is a downside it would be our upstairs courtyard room on our second visit. Due to being in the eves of the building, the sloping wall/ceiling was too low for my Husband who is 6'3". Also as the shower was over the bath in this room and in the eves, he couldn't actually shower properly as he couldn't stand up. I'm only 5'5" and could only just stand up to use the shower. However, that was really our only problem and next time if we have a courtyard room we will ask not to have an upstairs room.

Seeing some of the previous comments about the staff, I'm surprised at some of the negative views. We can't fault the staff who were extremely friendly and helpful.

Overall, we think Lumley Castle is a great place to stay and will certainly be doing so again in the near future.
