Second time in a year I've had lunch here and it did not fail to impress yet again! The food was simply gorgeous, fantastic flavours and cooked to perfection! Couldn't recommend enough!

“Fantastic!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2015

Found this lovely place whilst waiting for a passport. It looked so lovely when we went downstairs to check it out that we decided to come back for lunch later. We booked a table on the terrace for 1.30. When we came back the guy had put us right down at the front overlooking the river. The tables were set with white linen and sparkling cutlery. there were a few others in and the waiter was on his own. He took drink orders and the food orders, made the drinks, brought them out to everyone saying 'sorry about the delay' every time, to which everyone replied ' it's no problem!' Which it wasn't. It was obvious he was working hard and it was such a beautiful day and we didn't have anything else to do! We chose smoked haddock topped with a poached egg on watercress, then my friend had fillets of seabass and I had the rib-eye steak. Everything was delicious and perfectly cooked. We had a glass of wine each and a bottle of sparkling water. After relaxing for a while over a drop more wine (!) we decided we could fit in a dessert - we chose the chocolate fondant which was freshly made; a perfect baked shell of sponge with warm chocolate oozing out of the middle and salted caramel alongside. there was a scoop of raspberry sorbet and fresh raspberries garnishing. It was just divine! There is no expense spared in the presentation of the table and the food. the wineglasses are good, the decor is lovely, the service impeccable. The interior of the restaurant was gorgeous too and I'm sure in the evening it will look gorgeous with all the candles lit. We couldn't fault a thing and for £15 each for three courses it was amazing value. We have booked to go back on Bank Holiday Monday. Can't wait to show my husband this lovely place!

“If you can find it it's a real find !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2015

Our first day in Durham and we happened upon a menu board at the top of a staircase leading down from street level. The menu board looked interesting so we booked for later that evening. The food was superb, waiting staff very pleasant and efficient and we left feeling full having had a lovely evening at a table overlooking the river. Fabulously crisp pork belly, flavoursome ribeye steak, delicate monkfish wrapped in Parma ham and an oozy chocolate fondant with a divine salted caramel sauce and raspberry sorbet. Tempted?? Check it out for yourself

“Wonderful, don't miss out on this gem!”

Fantastic venue which is easily missed on the street. Wonderful food served in a wee cosy cellar - very romantic. The food is amazing.

“The Cellar Door saved us!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2015

Left another restaurant in a huff because the service was so poor and came to The Cellar Door late at night and very hungry. Had a wonderful meal and the service was excelled. We particularly recommend the double baked Brie on a bed of greens with cranberry coulis. Excellent!
