We came across this restaurant while getting a passport done in Durham, after a debate over whether we should go to here or the chippy we decided on Melanzana, thinking that if was best restaurant in Durham for two years running we couldn't go wrong. When we walked into the restaurant we were greeted by a scruffy lad who hadn't even bothered too tuck his shirt in, he quickly dumped us on a table next to the speaker which was playing some awful outdated pop music. The young lad returned a few minutes later to take our order, I went for the 5.95 lunch deal peperoni and my Dad ordered a calzone. The food arrived in a reasonable time and it was hot, however there was a distinct lack of meat on both pizzas, 5 pieces of cheap thin pepperoni! The food was edible and filling but not even as good as our local pizza shop not very good for an "Italian". We decided not to order deserts as there was nothing on the menu or on the boards, leading us to the conclusion that it would just be a scoop of ice cream or some shop bought cake. We asked for the bill and we were shocked to see that they had charged us 10% for the poor service, I had seen a notice on the menu saying they would do this however it had been crossed out which obviously shows these people are sly or just plain idiots. We couldn't be bothered arguing and paid up so we could get to Tescos for something nice to eat. This place is poorly managed, bad staff and no one knows what they are doing, the food was OK but not for the price. Calls itself an Italian but it is just a bunch of English people attempting to cash in on passers by who don't know any better, I mean what kind of an Italian serves a full English breakfast?! And the name is just a load of drivel Melanzana means eggplant in Italian. The Moral of the story is if you want average food filling food get yourself down to a half decent takeaway it will cost you half the price and you will get better service!
