“Used to be fine, till the new Manager came”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2009

This is a "grand buffet" restaurant at which I regularly ate with friends and family until very recently. The food is not first rate but pretty good anyway, plentiful and varied, with a very reasonable price of £11.95 for the grand buffet after 7.30 pm., cheaper at lunchtime when it's good value for money!

They have a reasonable selection of wines and beers to drink with the meal. The only drawback has always been that if you want water as well as wine or beer, you have to pay for bottled as they won't give jugs of tap water, though it does state on the menu that if you have a medical condition it is possible to order this. It's a comfortable environment with good views of the river and the Cathedral/Castle.

A couple of weeks ago I went there with a friend who is disabled. We asked for and were shown to a table; when I asked for one in a quieter part of the restaurant I was told no even though there were several free tables without reserved signs in a nicer area; this was not a good start and not what we had experienced on previous visits.

We ordered 2 Grand Buffets, a bottle of wine and a jug of iced water, my friend pointing out that she had a medical condition and needed the latter. The waitress refused the water and we asked to see the manager. He came over, was extremely rude and aggressive, poking his face into ours and shouting, drawing attention to us in front of all the other customers. He kept shouting at my friend to prove that she was diabetic and "show a card". She pointed out that she did not carry a card nor could be required to do so, whereupon he became even ruder and more aggressive, demanding to see "your card". She showed him her insulin pen as proof that she is diabetic, which seemed to make him very angry and he yelled at us to get out.

We decided that he must be drunk and left quickly, not wishing to have an unpleasant and public scene. My friend asked him if he was aware of current legislation on Disability Rights; his reponse was insulting and angry in the extreme and he continued to yell at us to leave as we exited the place. Before leaving, we informed him that he would be hearing from our legal representatives as he had breached the Disability Discrimation Act, and my friend gave him her legal adviser's card which he shoved roughly back at her. She politely but firmly handed it to him again, saying," I want you to have this card"; he then ripped it up and stamped rudely on it!

We asked his name and he refused to give it very rudely.

On leaving, we noticed that his licensee details were not displayed over the door in accordance with the law. This has since been reported to the Local Licensing Authorities who have taken action.

We were left, 2 respectable middle class professional ladies in their 50s, in a state of shock and utter disbelief at being treated in this rude, very aggressive and discriminatory way. We shall certainly not go back nor recommend the place to anyone. Logging onto the Durham Students Union website we found numerous comments about similar behaviour from this man since he arrived at In Shanghai.

At the moment we are taking legal advice about his disciminatory behaviour towards a registered disabled person and her friend, treated in this shocking way on a quiet, civilised night out together (or so we intended).

“All you can eat, but would you want to?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2009

In Shanghai would have been a good Chinese buffet, had they not tried to overreach themselves in size. The sheer amount of food laid out on the buffet dramatically affected the quality - a lot of the food tasted like it had been standing for some time and none of it was particularly hot. There was also an unusually large amount of fried foods which, although this might appeal to some, put me off slightly as the tempura prawns/spring rolls/battered chicken balls all tasted identical. The service wasn't bad, although we did have trouble attracting somebody's attention to pay the bill. For a buffet meal I would say the price was mid-range, but certainly not worth it. Overall, very disappointing, although I can't say I know any other Chinese restaurants in Durham city to recommend.

“Unfriendly service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2008

Its the usual buffet eat as much as you can deal. The price changes depending on the time of day. At 7pm its goes up from £6.90 to £11.90. As we went in at 6.30 we wre told we only had half an hour to eat which is fair enough but all through the meal the waitress kept reminding us over and over again which is very annoying. In the end she said we would have to finish out drinks elsewhere in the resturant. As it was barely half full I really could not see what the problem was.
The food was nice with plenty of choice but we were really made to feel that we were in the way and were being rushed to get out as soon as possible.
Not a very enjoyable experiance.
