“Dissapointment for my young daughter”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

Went in with my daughter to but some take away chips while waiting for our train to Exeter on Saturday 2 Feb .
They were advertising Bacon Bap and cup of tea so busy queue of locals . The boy behind the counter said they could not do any chips for us or it would take 'long time' and gave me a not very convincent look .
They definitely don't know how to serve customers when under pressure, why they dont hire one more cook or someone else to help?
Very common thing : my impression is that they are not bother !
So agreed with previous reviewer: bring your own food or wait until you get out the train if to Central Exeter . You have Tesco in front of the station.
Dissapointed .

Thank you for your review, i can but only apologise for you experience on 2nd Feb 2013 and that it was not explained to you why we were unable to fulfill your order. We had a conference booked, who had more attendees than expected and at short notice the client brought forward when they wish to have their meals, Therefore despite having enough staff for what was planned this last minute change to cook for 24 people put us under pressure, just before the train was due to depart and thus our busiest period. For a short period we were unable to take additional orders. I can only apologise for your experience but i hope my response explains more background to the day you visited. As with any food establishment during peak times food service can take longer than desired, for us with people catching the train this adds a further complication where we cant get the food to you before the train leaves. Therefore on rare occasions we then have to decline orders, or if people leave it only a few minutes just before the train leaves and the actual cooking time is longer than they have we also advise them of this. If you would like to make your self known at your next visit, i can discuss this further if you so require. We would also like to offer your daughter complimentry chips to make up for her disappointment.

“Good, honest fare for reasonable prices”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2012

Basic snacks / cakes / breakfasts with good variety of drinks. Does the job well, especially while waiting for the hourly train. Has a convenient and affordable meeting room upstairs with nice kitchen attached and presentation equipment.

“Bring your food with you instead!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2011

I travel on the train frequently and have learnt to bring my own food or wait till I get to Exeter. Made the mistake of eating a toasted sandwich here once, it was disgusting. I love my food and it's not often I dislike something as simple as a cheese toastie but this was just all grease and not much else, it was literally drowning in oil. Cake was ok but dry and quite hard. Only go here if you're desperate or run to Tesco if you have a spare ten minutes.

“Great Place to wait and eat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2011

I love station cafe's - not your bog buffets at main line station serving expensive rubbish, but the small private cafes were there is a personal interest in serving you and the best is the one at Barnstaple -a distraction in itself as well as a place to relax eat and browse. GREAT food well priced and very friendly worth a train ride from any where just to sample the cafe.

Thank you for your review and the kind words regarding our cafe. Now that our garden area is complete after the recent BBC filming here, we hope we have even more to offer customers. There can't be many Railway Station Cafe's in the UK which have their own private garden seating area filed with fragrent roses and colourful climbing plants! Thanks again.

“Decent coffee and snacks in nice authentic surroundings”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2011

If you have time to kill before catching a train from Barnstaple (and if the cafe is open) you could do worse than have a brief drink and a bite to eat here rather than sitting on the cold (metallic!) seats of the waiting area or the draughty platform. It makes a refreshing change to have a real old fashioned cafe instead of the carbon copy places that so many stations have nowadays. The fare is good (and not expensive!) and there are souvenirs available and useful booklets / information of special interest to train buffs, tourists and walkers. As the weather warms up, there is a pleasant outside seating area available.

Thank you for your kind comments in your review. We have tried hard to offer good quality food and drink in a setting that compliments the heritage of the station whilst offering modern facilities. Our winter opening times are 0800 - 1445 mon to Fri Sat 0800 to 1345. From 21/03/11 we revert to our main hours of 0800 to 1710 mon to fri and sat 0800 to 1445. We are also open all year round Mon to Fri 0645 to 0700 for the first train. In peak season this changes to 0645 to 1710 Mon to Fri. Thank you once again for the review.
