“not quite up to the reviews on here”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2010

My wife and I stayed last week for a couple of nights. The welcome was very nice, perhaps a little too patronising (as if we may never have stayed in a hotel before) but very friendly. The lobby and hall areas are very much in the b&B mid class, nothing really matches. Does not feel a special place. The room an oldie worldy four poster room, was pleasant enough but not worth £99. Bathroom functional but tiny. Dont book for a luxury stay away, which I guess is where it's try to place itself, probably falsely.

You'd be better off staying in a 2 star place, as the only facility you may miss is the bar - which is not inviting in the least anyway. location is not bad though, and taxi to bowness is only £2.70, windermere is a very short walk - probably closest for a drink anyway.

hope this helps to make up your mind

Having arrived amid the snow after a 5 hour drive which should have taken 2 hours we were warmly welcomed by Kerry who immediately made us feel at home. While booking in Alan appeared and before we knew it our bags were taken to our room. Nothing was too much trouble. Our room was warm, clean and comfortable and exactly as we imagined from the website.
Sarah's cooked breakfasts are to die for and just the start to the day one needs before setting off into the cold and heavy snow. Mulled wine, excellent range of malts and convivial company in the evenings - what more can you ask for?
Restaurants recommended - Giotto's (italian/english) and Mela's (indian) - really fantastic.
All in all a really great few days and although we didn't do as much walking as we would have liked we thoroughly enjoyed our 3 day stay and will definitely be back.
Alan and Sarah - hang onto Kerry she is a real asset.
Jan is hurriedly learning to play the piano so that she can sit at your grand and drive everybody nuts!!

We have stayed in this hotel several times now, both before and after the refurbishment, and like the friendly, relaxed atmosphere. The owners Alan and Sarah are lovely people, very welcoming and knowledgeable about the area and will give you tips and directions for places to visit. The staff are nice too, and will go out of their way to ensure you have an enjoyable stay. One day it rained quite heavily, and we got soaked while out walking, so they dried our coats etc for us.
The hotel is situated halfway between Windermere and Bowness with approximately a 15 minute stroll to each, where you will find numerous restaurants to choose from. We particularly liked Beresfords which is on the way to Bowness - delicious food and friendly staff.
The rooms are modern, warm and cosy with individually controlled central heating. They are equiped with a flat screen tv, tea and coffee making facilities, iron and board, and hair drier. The ensuite is clean and tidy and adequate for a short stay. There is a well stocked bar in the lounge area where you can relax by an open fire in the winter months - marvelous! The breakfast is fantastic with plenty of choice - full english, vegetarian, pancakes, various cerials and fruit juice, toast, and a selection of teas and coffee - well worth getting up for!
There is car parking at the hotel, but if you don't fancy driving, Windermere railway station is just up the road, and you can catch the bus to Ambleside and Grasmere from outside the hotel. Also you can use the swimming pool of another hotel, good for relaxing tired muscles after a days walking.
We always very much enjoy our stays and will definately be returning again.

booked this hotel expecting more! very dissapointed in the size of our bedroom and also expected a bathroom at least, instead of a broom closet style pokey shower room, talk about skimping. I felt like i was in a bedroom in a normal house not a hotel not very private at all and you could hear everything above, very noisy, we had the room directly at the top of the stairs and could also hear everything in the bar. we only stayed one night but only saw 2 members of staff and one was the manager/owner, however the were very pleasant and helpful. breakfast was basic and also took a while to be served, I was very dissapointed wouldnt go back.

Stayed 3 days at the Woodlands Hotel, would recommend. Staff friendly and helpful. Nice large clean room at frount of hotel, but quite. Within walking distance to lots of restaurants and to both Bowness and Windermere. Stayed on Bed & Breakfast basis. Used hotel as base for touring holiday.
