“Lake District Arts and Crafts house”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2012

This is the most wonderful example of arts and crafts architecture with a view that makes you gasp. Pick a sunny day then you can eat outside with a view of the lake. There is a changing exhibition which is usually of a very high standard.

“trip down Memory Lane”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2012

I was at school at Blackwell for four years 1950-54 so it was wonderful to go back and see the house in all its glory. Because i was such a huge fan of Miss Murphy, the head mistress when it was a school, i was sad that there was not more about her - she was such a huge influence on all the girls and quite unique in so many ways. the folders behind the desk have letters galore from pupils telling their stories and memories which i turn brings back more to anyone who reads them - i did in the cafe where i had a lovely coffee and cake.

The house has been beautifully restored to its former glory.

“Fine period house”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2012

This is a great period house and from the outside looks promising. The view of the lake is stunning.

The rooms inside are impressive but would have been better if set out in period.

Your visit will depend on the exhibition being held at the time. Check ahead as there is not much to do if the exhibit is not something that will interest you.

“Oops! Excellent aesthetic versus Average experience....................”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2012

A visit to this place IS very special;despite the way it is run - how mindblowing it could be if the organisational thinking were more joined up...............
Okay so you're some kind of organisation entrusted with the preservation of a fine example of an English Arts and Crafts House; how do you maintain the integrity of your task whilst ensuring profitability?
Probably only by stepping out of your comfort zone, not relying on formulaic visitor attraction strategies and by REALLY understanding WHY the repeat visitors LOVE the house and are drawn to it and then capitalising on this so that more do so. Maximise the potential for public engagement and stage exhibitions which really do connect with the ethos of the house and also connect viscerally to the sensations it generates in visitors.Harnessing aesthetic and emotion is the only real way to do justice to Blackwell.A previous exhibition of its life as a school served as a poignant tool by which to achieve this and really should be a permanent feature.
Also would it kill your staff to be friendly and even chatty about the house rather than just wanting to gift aid and sell tour books, from a frankly unimaginative shop in which the merchandise is predictable each year?
Entrance fees increase regularly without enhanced visitor experience in exchange.Sadly, this does not invest in return custom.
Come on, listen to your visitors, find out what they want and build for the future of this AMAZING treasure you have preserved and now need to develop.
