stayed for 2 nights 27th 28th july as we were at family christening after a 7 and a half hour journey and arriving in a storm we were shattered but the young lady on reception was pleasant only problem was parking after we had found a car park we enquired about dinner this was now 7 o clock and we were told last serving was7 30 so we had to put our skates on and quickly shower and dress a couple of minutes late but we were seated and quickly served some of the staff were a bit miserable but one stood out and that was Marco he was excellent he is wasted waiting on he should be front of house brilliant people skills the hotel is a little bit tired in places we had a premier suite with stunning sea view but a stain carpet and curtains unhooked but we were only there 2 nights so not worth complaining about food was rushed out 3 courses in 25 minutes hadn't time to digest each course but it was basic and not very appetising not very much atmosphere as most of the people were around 70 and 80 breakfast was okay but rushed again and as I said before some staff miserable and again Marco excelled great young man overall it was adequate and it was just 2 nights we would stay again as we have family there as it is fine for a couple of nights and thank you Marco for your pleasant and welcoming manner and efficiency

Room Tip: choose a premier room with sea view

We have just spent a one week Shearings holiday (20th July 2013) at the Royal Hotel and despite some previous reviews from other guests, we enjoyed it very much. We had paid extra however for a Superior room overlooking the sea which, I might add, is worth doing!! I know the food is not 'five star' but my husband and I were satisfied with what we had. After all, it was a package holiday and you get what you pay for. Some people are always happy to complain about something. The waiting staff work very hard I must say but just one thing we found was that the 7.30 sitting is a bit rushed as waitresses are trying to get tables set up for breakfast and you feel that you have to finish your meal quickly! We would go back for another holiday there but would like the same room we had last week!! (room 111)

Room Tip: Book a sea-view room and a Superior if possible as the view is amazing and the room excellent althou...

Our stay was from 19th July 2013, with the exceptionally hot weather fans are needed in the rooms that are not sea facing, but the first night only one small fan was in one of the 3 rooms we had booked and did not get the fans until the next day. There had been some rooms that had been refurbished (basic) but one of our Party's room had not been cleaned properly. The food was good with ample choice however I do agree with Allan H that the hotel has no atmosphere, and certain staff were far from friendly. We found that our waiter Marco was more than obliging and very professional you certainly felt that he had his eye on the ball at all times and would make you feel special as he did with other guests he was waiting on. If we asked him a question about the area he would have good knowledge and recommend places to visit. It is such a shame that there were no more staff members with the enthusiasm, efficiency and attention to detail as Marco.

Room Tip: Make certain you book a sea view room.

We stayed at the Royal 8-12 July and agree with previous reviewers.
car parking is a nightmare.
We did not like the fixed dining time for the evening meal, but the hotel was full and the dining room seemed to be organised chaos.
The evening meals are the three course standard, meat, fish or vegetarian for mains, breakfast was the best meal and the gammon on toast was a meal and a half in it's self.
We would recommend the sea view rooms (312) was ours with a shower rather than a bath with a wonderful view of the beach.
The hotel has no atmosphere compared to other "Shearings hotels" we have visited.(maybe because it's down south)
The entertainment (twice in four nights) is now in the lounge and the lovely ballroom is now just a place to park your mobility scooter.
We would say the staff are split 50/50 kind and friendly, and beware don't complain or make any comments.
.

Room Tip: opt for the sea view with shower unit

Thank you for your recent review. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your comments regarding your stay with us. I am sorry to hear that you were disappointed in the entertainment here at the hotel. In the summer season we do reduce the entertainment as we have found that a majority of our guests do prefer to take a walk in the evenings with the fine weather. We have found it necessary to hold our entertainment in the bar area as we have a very large ballroom and if there are not many guests watching the entertainment it can feel very empty. I am pleased to hear that you found the staff kind and friendly. We as a hotel do appreciate comments from our guests as it is a very positive way of rectifying issues if they occur. We look forward to seeing you again in the near future.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2013

We returned to the Royal Hotel after a very pleasant stay in February, what a change, granted the weather was lovely so there were a lot of people on the beaches therefor car parking was non existent, shame because my sister has just had open heart surgery and although we had a pass we were not able to park any where near the hotel, apparently the nice car park the hotel owned at the rear was sold to the council.(big mistake there was no one in it).
Enough of that, the next complaint is the entertainment, we were there for 4 nights two of which there was no entertainment at all and what little they did have has been moved from the ballroom downstairs to the main lounge bar.
Another big mistake, if you want to dance there is no dance floor and if you just want to talk in the lounge you cant because the music is too loud.
Of the two nights entertainment only Terri was worth listening to as the other one was awful.
The memorable meals were the breakfasts, the eggs perfect and all nice and hot, they do a good kipper as well and despite what other people say they is plenty for the average appetite when you add on cereals, toast jam and rolls.
The evening meals were good but the veg UGG the beans were uncooked and they served some sort of mixed veg with a strong sauce over it, not food for elderly, more for the young lads to put over curry although we give thumbs up for red cabbage (very nice).
I have to say that two people shone above the rest one being Toria, talk about ubiquitous, cleaner in the morning, restaurant at supper and bar in the evening, a very very nice young lady (don't lose her she would certainly make good manager material).
The other was a waiter called Marco, pleasant, quick and very very funny, another one to watch.
The room cannot be faulted and our cleaner was excellent think her name was Jan.
All in all not a patch on our stay in February and as someone has already said the restaurant seating certainly needs to be sorted out.
Get the entertainment back downstairs, make it as good as Eastbourne(have there own car park and charge five pounds a day but good for parking), Paignton (have their own car park) as do St Ives, then I may recommend this hotel, may even come back myself .
Lovely hotel lovely view lovely staff, shame about the entertainment and stupid management idea of changing it from the ballroom to the lounge.
NOT THE ONLY ONE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS.
Also whose crazy idea was it to sell the car park, they could have and would have got five pounds a day from their guests for a guaranteed car park space.

Room Tip: choose a sea view upgrade but not over lounge. In the winter a corner room is cold.

We stayed here for a week on a Shearings coach holiday to Weymouth. We have stayed at Shearings hotels 11 times, but this was the worst ever because of the terrible food and dining room seating arrangements. On leaving the coach and joining the queue to book in we were all asked what time we would like our evening meal. This meant that those who were first in the queue got their choice. As we were at the back of the coach we ended up with 6.45pm as our time. We thought that this would give the 6pm diners time to eat up and leave room for us. Not so! Every evening at 6.45, the dining room was still full and we had to give our name and we were then shown to the tables that nobody wanted to sit at at 6pm. In the whole week we didn't sit anywhere we wanted to and often had to sit in the middle of 2 other couples. They call them tables for 2 but most of them are only 6" away from the next table. We felt like we were the ones who hadn't booked for dinner and the staff were doing us a favour by finding us a table. Every evening the tables were missing a knife or spoon or salt etc. If you're lucky they will half fill your glass with water - they have always taken bar orders in the other hotels we have stayed in. The soup was a disgrace - half a bowl of something of dubious consistency, sometimes with lumps of thickening agent floating around. The meals are very small portions always with 2 types of potatoes - why? Braised steak consisted of three cubes of meat and about 6 slices of mushroom! The veg are usually something you don't like, and the sweets are very boring and like school dinners or hospital food. The food was never hot enough and the staff are always running round trying to serve everybody. Presentation is non existent. If you want tea or coffee afterwards you serve yourself from the large flask of stewed brew!! The full English breakfast consists of 1 sausage, 1 rasher of bacon, 1 egg, half a tomato, 1 hash brown and a few baked beans - served in a little dish for some reason. The table where you help yourself to fruit juice and cereals is far too small (only 1 person at a time). As always in Shearings hotels, the public rooms are clean and well cared for - however this place was very dull and depressing at night. Our bedroom (204) was only big enough for a single room. It had a view over a glass roof and fans from the kitchen. The bedside cupboard had been moved to under the window to accommodate the TV. I had to put a chair by the side of the bed for my glass of water and alarm clock. I don't think anybody gets a decent room unless they pay for a superior room. The cleaners make the bed, empty the bin and replace the towels. The carpet wasn't hoovered the whole week. The mattress on the bed creaked every time we turned over and was full of lumps and springs. After 2 sleepless nights we stripped the bed and turned the mattress over - it seemed to do the trick. The horrible bed covers seem to have been ditched and they are now using a type of duvet which is open at the bottom and tucks in!! The pillows are as bad as ever - flat! I don't think the curtains in the bedroom had ever been washed, the pelmet at the top was thick in dust. The "entertainment" happens in the bar/cafe area and around the corner where no one can see what's happening. 3 nights there was no entertainment. Downstairs in the basement there is a stage and a large seating area and a bar which they appear to use for private functions. This is quite obviously where they should have the entertainment so that everybody can see what's going on. I certainly wouldn't want my private function in that place. After a week in this hotel we felt like we had been staying in an old folk's home - and we're pensioners! Never again in a Shearings hotel - over the years we have seen the quality go down and down.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are probably quieter but the only view is the rooftops.

We had a great stay over the recent bank holiday weekend. The staff were friendly a special mention must go to our waitress's Fran and Maria, who are Spanish so we could talk about Fernado Alonso !
Our room was 308 it had a huge bay window with a brilliant view over the sands. Also a real plus for us, was we were able to keep an eye on our motorbike in the motorbike park infront of the hotel . The room was clean and tidy
The only fly in the ointment was part of the walk to Portland was closed and we could not follow the diversion signs .But hopefully it should all be open now.
This was our third stop at the Royal and we will stop again.

Room Tip: Always get a seaview room
