“Worst B&B of seven in total on our recent Great Britain trip”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2011

In planning a three week trip to Britain, I did not realize that May 28 was on a Bank Holiday weekend, so my options for booking a B&B from Canada were limited. I did find a site which allowed me to confirm a one-night reservation at Heathwick House, which I opted for because of its location and ratings. However, it was the worst of the seven B&Bs we stayed in over the three weeks.
Positives: Windows opened unto a vista of rolling hills and cattle. Room was quiet as it was away from the highway. Conveniently provided a breakfast order form in the room to be filled in and placed in reception for the hosts the evening before. Awakened to the sound of a rooster crowing in the distance.
Negatives: A cool, business like reception [around 5:00PM] on arrival, as if we had disturbed the host's routine.
No towels in the room. I had to find Roger who came upstairs and provided them, with an apology.
The room was dated and showed its age. We stayed in older buildings on this trip, but they were better maintained.
Ran out of hot water in the shower.
A very tight squeeze into the en-suite commode/toilet. You had to sit on an angle as the sink was right on top of you.
Breakfast served with individual jam/marmalade jars already opened.
My wife had ordered the fruit for breakfast. Her breakfast included a piece of watermelon that was soft and mushy, i.e., almost bad and past its eat-before date. My spoon was still dirty.
One or two days before arriving at each of our B&Bs, I would send an email advising of our estimated time of arrival. All but Heathwick acknowledged my message, which would have been nice, as a courtesy.

Stayed here for 1 night as our boys were camping nearby with their grandparents so we went down for a couple of days to bring them home.
The owners were away so Steve was looking after the place and did a fine job. Very welcoming and helpful, just what you want in a host.
The room was very large and had everything we needed. Had a great lookout over the countryside and the free wifi was superb. Had a great nights sleep and the breakfast was fantastic.
All in all a great stay, it is a bit out of the way but the views make it worthwhile.

After my hubby was diagnosed with the coeliac condition last year we have been looking for an establishment that caters for gluten free diets and at last we found it. Nothing is too much trouble; chocolate gluten free biscuits in the room, sausages for breakfast even pancakes if you want and toast yes toast (my husband was completely made up !!) also all the nice touches like home made preserves were lovely. The hotel and rooms are also very clean and well presented; additionally things like glasses for wine were put in the room when Ruth noticed we had wine on the side. I would recommend to anyone perfect, quiet and accommodating.
