“Very relaxing weekend away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2013

Just what we needed. Not the most luxurious hotel but it had everything we could ever want with a fantastic room, seriously good food and excellent customer service. When we asked if we could move to another room this was all done within 10 minutes and we got a real sense that everyone was keen for us to be as happy as possible. Lots of time spent reading the papers by a roaring fire and walking in the stunning surrounding countryside. We didn't want to leave and even considered barricading ourselves in our beautiful room.

Room Tip: Our room at the top of the hotel with views over Chesil Beach was stunning.

The building and surroundings are lovely, but this is definitely NOT a luxury spa hotel as it states in the brouchure. The reasons for this are:

-They charge you £10 extra for room service. That's something you imagine a budget hotel (or Easyjet) doing, not a luxury one.
-The pool could be nice, but it's tired and not very clean. The chairs around it are very old and hard. This is not luxury spa.
- The food is ordinary and the restaurant is old, 80s Mediterranean style. I ordered a 100% beef hamburger and couldn't eat it as it tasted like something you'd buy in the frozen section of a corner shop. Breakfast was also very ordinary.
- Hotel is geared for families with toddlers so don't go for a romantic break.

I was prompted to write this review as the hotel sells itself as a luxury hotel and this is misleading. Moonfleet Manor should sell itself as a three-star guest house in an spectacular setting which welcomes families with young children.

Dear Maria G,

Many thanks for taking the time to post a review on Tripadvisor. Whilst respecting your opinions, I do not wholly agree with them, although I always look for ways to improve from our guest feedback.

Firstly, I think that basing a judgement on a short, one night stay may not reflect the overall ambiance of a property, especially when "Luxury Spa Hotel" does not appear in any of our literature, either digital or hard copy.

Our Pool is indeed not a brand new state of the art pool. It is, however, clean, warm and provides a natural division of age and ability, with 3 alternatives. Our Changing rooms have just been refurbished, as mentioned in previous reviews and have generated great feedback.

Our Burgers come from our Butchers - Walter Rose of Devises, Wiltshire. They only ever deal with trusted South West based farms so that they can guarentee the quality of their produce. Burgers are always bought fresh, never frozen and never from a supermarket. I am sorry that you did not like your Burger, but I would be very happy to hear from you on how we could improve it. Please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss.

Moonfleet is very geared to the family market, but we welcome all sectors of the market from couples, to corporate and our philosophy of looking after people does not change. The longer you stay, the more time we have to help you relax.

I hope that we get the opportunity to see you again sometime soon.

Kind regards

Neil

We had a wonderful and relaxing 4 day break with our 3 and 1 year old boys. It really is perfectly set up for families. The weather was very wet but that didn’t matter at all as there are so many activities to do. Both boys loved the indoor play area and the swimming pool (with very smart newly refurbished changing rooms for those that are interested). The kids tea at 5.30 is great as younger children can eat and then go to bed giving adults the evening by themselves. The food was very good. Kids tea was a little salty for toddler aged children but the chef was more than happy to prepare other dishes for us.

All the staff were brilliant and helpful. We felt really welcome. The staff in the crèche are fantastic and both boys were very content to join in the activities there for a couple of hours each day which meant my husband and I got some time by ourselves.

We had a lovely big suite in the old part of the building (Elzevir). The boys slept in the very large sitting room and we then had our own room. Baby no. 3 is due in a couple of months and we would request this room if/when we stay again as it’s plenty big enough for a family of 5.

Make sure you ask about the breakfast club if you are there on a Sunday. They pick your children up from your room and give them breakfast in the crèche so you can have a bit of a lie-in/lazy breakfast. No one told us about this and we were disappointed to miss out. Although something to look forward to next time….

Room Tip: We stayed in Elzevir which was a lovely big suite in the old part of the building. Our 2 boys (3 an...

I'd been given a voucher as a gift so took a friend for champagne afternoon tea. We got to choose where we sat , it was a really cold day and a nice lit fire would have been nice. The tea consisted of sandwiches, 3 slices of cake and a scone. Also a pot of tea. It was just ok! Nothing special, no body came to ask if we were alright or wanted more tea. The cups, plates didn't match. It was cold and unwelcoming and to make matters worse whilst we were sitting there a man came and put logs and papers on the fire it still didn't get lit! But it was very unprofessional to do that in front of guests trying to eat! Needless to say I wouldn't go back or recommend it for afternoon tea go to Summerlodge and have something really special. The manager was very friendly though!!

Dear JanetPortlanduk,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on tripadvisor. I am genuinely sorry that you felt that your experience at Moonfleet was "just Ok". We are aiming for "Great" and it disappoints me should we ever fall short of this. I would be very interested to hear more, so please do call me at your convenience.

Absolutely the fires should have been lit and one of our team should have checked back with to see if there was anything else they could get for you. We will work harder at getting better.

Summer Lodge is indeed a very nice Afternoon Tea and I would recommend it to anyone. It is just worth noting that it is a full £10 per person more expensive than Moonfleet though.

Kind regards

Neil

One of the previous reviewers wrote "you either get it or you don't" and we definitely got it! I wasn't sure if we would manage to get some down time with our toddler in tow but we came away rested and wanting to book again. The kids facilities are excellent (our daughter had the best time racing around the indoor play area and swimming etc) and the creche team are just lovely (i wasn't sure if we'd be comfortable leaving her but she loved it and it gave us a chance to grab a coffee and read a paper). The baby listening service coupled with superb food and wine were pure heaven. The hotel itself is in need of some TLC as others have stated. The lounge areas are fab though (the fires were lit whenever you wanted to unwind and warm up) and the location is stunning with views of the coastline and countryside. Snoopy the dog was a big hit and makes the hotel feel like a home.

It's not cheap but I realise now that you are not paying for "luxury" in the sense of designer interiors and an overall feeling of polish etc but more for the total experience. Get your head around that before you go and you'll love it!

Room Tip: Call and discuss with the hotel as they helped us get the right room for our needs.

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights in March with our 16 month old daughter for a little break before our second child arrives soon.
Fantastic location, very very beautiful lagoon and surrounded by countryside. The staff were excellent (unbelievably all of them, hotel, creche, Spa, Restaurant, bar service) and Snoopy the hotel dog now has a little place in our daughters heart.
Excellent food, fantastic play area for all ages of children: mini indoor football pitch had me wishing we'd gone with friends so the Dads could have played pre-drinks. Hotel could do with a makeover and the creche and pool area are not attractive from the outside but inside are good.

Dear duggy6,

Thank you so much for taking the time to post a review on tripadvisor. Everyone at the Hotel is so pleased that you had such a good time and we really look forward to seeing you again soon - perhaps with friends for that football match!

By then, I would expect that the Creche would have moved to the Verandah building as we speed up our refurbishment plans before summer. This will really change the feel of that building because we will be refurbishing the bar area at the same time, creating a buzzy little coffee area to further enhance the relax opportunities up there.

Keep an eye on our facebook page for updates and further news.

kind regards

Having worked in the Travel and Tourism industry overseas for many years we understand what makes a good hotel tick. We went to Moonfleet Manor at the end of January 2013 with very high expectations. Our expectations were not just met but exceeded! The staff were wonderful, nothing was too much trouble and our 17 month old daughter was treated like royalty! There were so many things to entertain our daughter and as she was in her element this meant we could relax knowing she was happy. Food in the evening was simply fabulous, rooms are wonderfully characterful and comfortable. Overall we could not rate this stay highly enough and we will definitely be going back. Thank you to all the staff at Moonfleet as we loved it!
