Me & Wes paid a return visit to Hamiltons Restaurant - 31st., August 2013. We first came here 2 years ago. This time we were shown to our table, which by chance was the same as on our first visit.
The food we had which was the Pork Cheeks dish was very good, accompanied by a side plate of vegetables.
Unfortunately, the menu was limited, especially when compared to the blackboard on display earlier for dishes served during the day.
Our desserts were a bit disappointing. I ordered the cheese board which was just a plate of various cracker biscuits & lots of various cheeses, (mostly hard cheeses). Now, I like crackers & I like cheese, but there was just too much of it. Also, there was a bit of what looked like thinly sliced radish & what I think was very thinly sliced celery?? Overall, it was just too dry. What I would expect is a nicer selection of cheeses, especially soft cheeses, some chutney & maybe a few grapes.
Wes had the dessert special, the Caramelised Plum Tart. The problem was, there was too much plum & a very thin pastry base. This meant that the fruit overwhelmed the pastry base, so it was unbalanced.
The decor of Hamiltons hasn't changed (at all) in the two years between visits, including the patch of damp near the front window! The restaurant looks very dated & the lighting isn't very subtle. Also, there is a narrow access to the cellar toilets which is a bit awkward.
The service, or lack of, was also disappointing. There were three members of staff, a young lady, a young man & an older gentleman.
Not one of these staff members were exceptional. The older gentleman was quiet & distant apart from when dealing with a table opposite us. He engaged with these 4 people to the exclusion of everyone else. Not one time did we have any real interaction by any of the member of staff at Hamiltons. It was just the bare minimum.
One of the party of 4 ordered the Pork Cheeks dish (the same dish as us), and was offered mustard which is more than we were.
So, this was our second visit to Hamiltons Restaurant & sadly, it will be the last. We found other restaurants, including other Italian restaurants who were much more welcoming.
