Thank you for your review, i am so sorry your stay did not fully meet your expectations. I am pleased service you receive from the staff was to our usual high standards.
I am sorry you felt the food was over priced, we do source the majority of our food from local quality sources and you do tend to have to pay more for quality (many of our reviews are very complimentary about the food served in the restaurant).
The credit card charge can be avoided buy the use of a debit card which has no charge attached, we have had to reluctantly add a small credit card charge due to the increased charges by the banks.

As I spent my childhood in the area (Dufton), I was looking forward to a pleasent return at what I thought was a high-standard hotel.
What a let down!
Although booking through an on/line agent I still expected -as promised- a `classic` & relaxing
stay,
We were put in an annex (converted outhouse!) after being conducted through rear yard up a
set of wooden,outside steps.
Although good size room, clean and warm,we found sleep quite difficult when we realised by
the noise- we were about 20yds from the Appleby duel carriage- by/pass! an extreamly busy road to say the least.(all night!)
To access the main hotel from these outside rooms, one must go thru a back entance, pass thru
what seems like service quarters(badly in need of decoration!)
Although the conservatory is extremely comfortable, the `so called` bar is a room with one table!
As for the staff, apart from dining room staff,(where food is excellent) most of them seem to want
to be somewhere else! , in particular- the reception staff..
An Hotel which does not live up to it`s billing!!!. A real disappointment../

Thank you for your review, i am so sorry that some aspects of your stay did not fully meet your expectations. I am pleased the food and service you received in the restaurant from the staff was to our usual high standards. I am sorry you felt the rest of the staff did not meet our high standards ( as attested to by the vast majority of reviews below) i will of course look into your comments and take any necessary action.
All our guests are informed at time of booking on which area of the hotel they are staying in and are routinely offered the opportunity to choose the area or upgrade rooms if they so wish,
The Coach house rooms were refurbished just a couple of years ago to the same standard as the main house rooms and have triple glazing, the only difference being that they are slightly smaller and detached from the main building but obviously this is reflected in the room cost.
Finally i really do wish you had voiced your concerns when staying at the hotel as we would have tried to resolve any issues you many of experienced.

We stayed here for a weekend and experienced great service from a very helpfull and capable staff. The food in the restaurant was delicious and we had pre booked a meal at a special rate of £30 pp for three courses which is great value.

The only downside for me was that the Spa was a little small and could do with freshening up.

All in all though this is a great place to stay!!!

Many thanks for your kind comments regarding your recent stay at Appleby Manor.
I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay, I will of course post your review on our staff notice board so the whole team can take pride in your review.
We do inform our guests on booking and on the website that the leisure center is quite small and is more for relaxation than serious exercise and we do not refer to it as a spa as this could be very misleading.
On behalf of all the staff I would like to thank you for your time and efforts that you have taken to let us know about your pleasant experience with us.

I bought a 2 night bed and breakfast stay here as part of a groupon deal for my boyfriend for his birthday. We were pleasantly surprised at the beautiful surroundings of the property and were bowled over by the fantastic service we received! The breakfast was delicious and we were treated like royalty. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We did pay extra for a 3 course meal which I would highly recommend! Was absolutely amazing and the service AMAZING!! The bedrooms were a comfortable size and were clean. my only criticism would be that the bed was quite hard for both my partner and i but aside from that the stay was exacrly what we wanted. we had a day trip out to keswick, windemere and ambleside which only took a 30-40 minute drive. Loved every minute here and would definitely recommend it.
Hats off to the staff!

Fantastic! Many thanks for your review. We do feel passionately about the hotel and the service our guests receive, its quite personal as we put a lot of time and effort into the hotel to create a relaxing and friendly atmosphere. A hotel is not a hotel without its staff, so it's uplifting for them when they receive praise. Many thanks for your time in sharing your experience at the Manor.
Its also great to hear you thought the break was great value for money.
Keep an eye on our website as we regularly post special offers throughout the year, We hope to be able to welcome you back again soon,

Many thanks

Stayed for just the Saturday night. The staff were very friendly and courteous, lovely room.

Dinner in the restaurant was very good, for the main course I ordered the calves liver and I asked for it pink, the waiter said `that is how it is cooked`, but alas when it arrived it was over cooked.
I mentioned this to the waiter and a fresh dish was prepared in only a few minutes with the Chef's apologies, this time to perfection and really did melt in the mouth.
I used to own a restaurant and mistakes can happen, but when they are rectified as quickly this was, then all is well.
Breakfast the next morning was very good, all in all a most enjoyable stay.
My only criticism is that there is a 2% charge if using a credit card, this is the only hotel I have stayed where they do this!

Many thanks for your kind comments regarding your recent stay at Appleby Manor.
Firstly congratulations on your anniversary.
I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay, I will of course post your review on our staff notice board so the whole team can take pride in your review. Many hotels and travel companies now charge for credit card use as the banks keep increasing the charges, we do not charge for debit card use so these charges can be avoided.
I would like to thank you for your time and efforts that you have taken to let us know about your pleasant experience with us and look forward to welcoming you back

We spent 6 nights at the Appleby Manor Hotel and had a lovely stay. What struck me the most was the obliging staff. They were so friendly and helpful and 'no' never seemed to come out of their mouths! We were blown away by the first class service but this was tainted by a bad breakfast experience, but the guilty parties weren't the staff we'd seen around so we have accepted this to be a rare occurrence.

Here's an objective view of the pros and cons:

The good: beautiful manor house, lovely view of the Pennines from the conservatory, good food, well placed between the Lake District and the Pennines, Appleby is a very nice town, excellent service, lovely bathroom, adequate facilities and entertainment.

The not so good: close to the motorway which never bothered us but may have it was the summertime with everything open and the evening menu was overpriced with no light options (this put us off staying in). If you're only after Lake District excursions, it is a bit of a drive (30mins to get to the closest parts)

Room Tip: The Heelis Suite is great BUT doesn't have a view of any sort. It is extremely quiet and perfect...

Thank you so much for your great review of the manor. Its fantastic to know we are doing something right and it does give all the team a buzz to know our guest are enjoying their time at Appleby manor. Thanks for highlighting all the great things to do in the local area we are really blessed in our situation so close to the Lake District, North Yorks Dales and the Pennines.
I am so sorry that on one occasion our usual service levels were not evident, i will of course look into this and follow up your comments through our training schedule.
Hope to welcome you back in 2013.

We booked this as a change from our normal hotels and what a lovely surprise. A warm welcome followed by a very comfortable 2 nights stay. Room was large and airy, excellent bathroom, if small but spa bath and in wall TV made up for this. We ate in the hotel both nights and the food was great, again staff were friendly and helpful.

Breakfast was fantastic, hot, obviously cooked to order and tasty. We will return.
