Like several other reviewers I remember this hotel from the days, many years ago, when it was one of the "gems" in this charming market town. Not any more - after several changes of ownership it has gradually detriorated from "tired" to "appalling".
On our last trip to visit relations a few days ago we were stunned to find that things had actually got worse. The bathroom in our small double room was just awful with what looked like black mould around the bath taps and with the tiles, bath and sink all in desperate need of renewal - the bath mat was paper! And, as for the bed, the undersheet was too small, the duvet too big, the pillows quite revolting and the whole experience of sleeping in it very unpleasant indeed. It's difficult to make a hearty Yorkshire cooked breakfast totally tasteless but somehow they did it.
We paid a discounted rate of £55 per night including breakfast against the normal full rate of £88. Even at the discounted price it's hard to find anything good to say about it other than in respect of several of the hard working staff who, somehow, maintain their enthusiasm despite all of this. At full price it's a complete rip-off - the new owners need to do something... fast.
Apart from the bar... there is nothing to recommend about our stay here. The room was scruffy and poorly furnished. The bathroom looked like it belonged in an institution - no home comforts, the bath and sink were chipped and their surfaces were peeling away in chunks. The acessories consisted of soap and a plastic cup. The weekend we stayed was busy but that is no excuse for the horrors of breakfast. When we arrived at 9am on sunday morning every table was piled high with dirty crockery. We had to find and clear our own table before we cought sight of the staff who proceded to set our table with leftovers from a previously occupied table nearby - including a half eaten dish of butter. The breakfast was average and many of the warm items (including plates) had run out - we were assured they would be replaced soon but nothing arrived for 15 minutes. Meanwhile the two young girls on duty seemed content to stand around apologising for the mess rather than getting on whith actually waiting tables or clearing dishes. We were actually told we should have come earlier as 'breakfast finishes in an hour so things are bound to have run out'
Overall as someone brought up in Beverley the town's main hotel was a huge let down. How they can dare to charge nearly £90 a night to stay in such poor accomodation is a mystery. The whole place needs closing down until the much promised refurbishment can be completed - and no i didn't ask for a refund as they always offer you a free night next time you stay - and i've no intention of ever setting foot in this place again.
i have to be fair staff and food excellant, but bedroom and bathroom need demolishing it was awful
Earlier Trip Advisor reviews implied that the hotel was not a good choice. However, it had been taken over by the Swallow Group and a year into the new management we decided to give it a go. At one time the Beverley Arms was the flagship hotel of this small market town, very elegant, genteel, high teas and cream cakes. By the reviews it had fallen a long way.
Swallow appeared to have done nothing whatsoever to improve the hotel. Our room had two tiny single beds, peeling wallpaper and a towel rail held together with duct tape. The room was dark and drear and had that unidentifiable smell of age and must and tiredness.
We didn't try the dinner but the breakfast was not great.
The bed I slept in had a sideways list like a sinking lifeboat. I would wake up clasping the side of the bed to avoid falling out. Fortunately we only stayed a couple of days.
I have no idea what plans Swallow has for this hotel but, at the moment, I can best describe it as very sad. And that's too bad. I was brought up in Beverley and have fond memories of the way the hotel used to be.
