“Beautful Country Home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2011

An excellent place to visit. We were three of a party of a group of 24 visiting by arrangement to hold a service in the private chapel and reserved lunch followed by a conducted tour with an excellent guide. The organ plaing can be heard througout the house. Well worth the distance travelled.

“Interesting house, wonderful walled garden, good food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2011

If you're round and about the East Riding it's well worth making a visit to Sledmere House. The house itself was drastically rebuuilt in 1911-1913 after a fire destroyed much of the buidling. The rebuild followed many of the design features of the old house, but resulted in some incredible plasterwork ceilings, a wonderful gallery-library on the upper floor, a heavily tiled "Turkish Room", and an interesting collection of furniture and paintings.

The rebuild was done by Sir Mark Sykes who is best known for the Sykes-Picot agreement between France and the UK during WW1 that proposed carving up the Ottoman Empire in the Middle East which created the countries close to what we we know today Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq, Jordan.... with the UK getting control of some after the war, and France others.

The walled garden is in the process of major refurbishment - and looks terrific already.

The restaurant is friendly and serves good sandwiches, cakes, soup etc.

“Crock Of Gold”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2011

Sledmere House is a beautiful stately home! The house was beautiful and you could go around most of it. There was a quiz to keep you amused, also. The staff and tour guides were very helpful. It is certainly a very enchanting house. The gardens were also lovely and I thoroughly enjoyed the playground. Top class!
