How bizarre and beautiful to have this genuine French cafe in the heart of North Devon! When so many eating places get pretentious and call themselves "bistros" and "brasseries" in this corner of England, this is the REAL THING. We are so privileged to have genuine French cuisine on the doorstep. The Cafe du Parc is always reliable for a nutritious and delicious cheap lunch. The place is consistently good, with unpretentious Breton fare, the menu constantly changing according to the availability of local produce: how very Gallic! On our latest visit from Holsworthy, my (French) friend and I relished savoury crepes with walnuts and goat's cheese and curly salad leaves - and had no room for tea or supper later. Simply gorgeous. Protein, carbs and fibre on one delicious plate. And there's the bonus of the wonderful Burton Art Gallery...a constantly-enterprising place, where local children are invited to be creative, to display their art, and to be encouraged in a hands-on way. The resident displays of Devon artists' works - Hubert Coop etc - are an on-going delight, balanced with enterprising exhibitions of more lattter-day practitioners. The gallery's ever-tempting shop, and its friendly and obliging staff are a credit to this little North Devon gem. My one wish as regards The Burton? Please, let us be able to buy prints of some of the classic works from the permanent collection. We can't afford the originals, but we'd love to have some vicarious Coops and Acklands and Trefusis-es on our walls!
