“Good food lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 weeks ago

Haven't been in hear for a number of years. It has been modernised over the years and as is so often the case, it's lost some of its old charm. But anyway I suppose it's trying to reach a different market from 30 years ago. Anyway, we visited on a Friday lunch time as a birthday meal for 88 year old mother. We were made very welcome by the landlord and had the back room to ourselves. We all had the two courses for £12. Food was good and served hot and efficiently by smiley staff. A pint of locally brewed 'Drekley went down a treat. Not the easiest of access for a wheelchair but manageable. Overall, a pleasant time was had and good value too in an old coaching house. I'd go again.

We stayed two nights at the Hoops Inn, mainly because of its proximity to Royal North Devon Golf Club. We found the room quiet, warm and comfortable. We had asked for a room away from the main road and I suppose those rooms may be slightly noisy but ours was fine, even with the window open. It's an old coaching inn with all the cosines you would expect of this genre. The meals in the bar and restaurant were excellent, the staff efficient, prompt and courteous without being intrusive and the choice of wines and beers very good. We stayed in November so we couldn't use the large garden but it looks very pleasant. Prices were extremely reasonable. Strongly recommended.

Stayed for a couple of nights last week. Our room was not enormous but perfectly adequate. We ate here both nights and I had mussels as a starter; the best I have ever had, although not a great quantity. Main course was roast partridge which was very tasty but slightly over cooked , so a touch dry..My wife had risotto which she enjoyed. The following night I had a turbot dish I found slightly disappointing.
The staff are friendly and efficient, and the beers are well kept, and I would have no hesitation in recommending this place.

Room Tip: The floor boards outside rooms 8 & 10 creak.

My husband and I chose this little inn on the internet. It looked really olde worlde and quaint and didnt disappoint on that part. Its also dog friendly which was a plus. On arrival staff very attentive and friendly. We had a room at the back which was very quiet. Huge comfortable bed (maybe too big for size of room). Cleanliness wasnt of a high standard - we found dust on lampshades and pictures. The bathroom was rather tired looking. The room had a spa bath, however the jets didnt work and the water pressure was very slow (which in all fairness is likely in an old building). We decided to have a meal in the evening, - we really wish we hadnt. We both fancied good old fashioned fish and chips. The chips were burnt and the fish was tasteless, and the batter again, was well overdone. It didnt appear that the fryer oil could have been changed recently. This was evident when stood outside for some fresh air later, the stale smell of oil! However, the breakfast in the morning was absolutely superb. Although the cold selection was very limited - cereals and juice. No yoghurt or fresh fruit(as stated on the menu) Toast was plentiful. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his cooked breakfast. The service was excellent as it was at dinner. Very attractive Inn but in my opinion I wouldnt have dinner if I decided to stay again.

I love this little inn. It was so cute, quaint, olde worlde. I stayed here with my husband for business on Oct 9. It was off the main road but still very quiet surrounded by countryside. It was cold and a bit rainy the evening we stayed and we received a nice warm welcome from the front desk. The place itself was part of a little pub/restaurant on the other side of where the rooms were; still close to each other. Our room was beautiful with beamed ceilings, old wooden doors, very clean. Very warm and cozy. Bed was big and comfy. Bathroom was also good size with nice shower and bath. We had dinner in the restaurant. Many outside people were coming in for dinner so you knew the food was good, and it was. Very yummy, very affordable. The restaurant was very cozy and comfy as well. We loved everything about this hotel and wish we could of stayed longer. The service was wonderful as well. We had breakfast which was also delicious. It was such a beautiful and romantic place and we were completely satisfied with our stay. Can't wait to come back!

My wife and I decided on a short break of two nights in North Devon. We could not have chosen a nicer place. Weather was lousy but the experience inside the Hoops compensated for what was going on outside. Staff very attentive and friendly, rooms comfortable, clean, warm and food excellent.
Reading some of the other comments: yes, if you look for problems you will find them, accept the surroundings for what they are and you will come away feeling relaxed and very full. I read someone's comment about creaky floors. This is a 13th Century Inn !!! If you want sterile, plastic carpets laid on a concrete floor then it's a bit brainless to book yourself into this interesting place that has plenty of character and atmosphere. Will be returning.

We had lovely two night stay at the Hoops Inn, we were in the suite, which is gorgeous.

The staff, food and general ambiance is 2nd to none, the only thing stopping a full house was the bed, the mattress is starting to get a bit tired, which we both found hard to get comfortable on.

Overall tho thoroughly recommend you try the Hoops

Room Tip: Pay the extra for the suite
