“Excellent Four Nights”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2014

A good 'out of the way' location with views across the River Torridge. A building full of character and History and the new Owners hope to restore some more of its historic character.
My wife and i felt welcomed and at home - nothing was too much trouble for the Owners and willing staff. Good food with a young chef and kitchen staff out to impress and they did! - However out of two nights dining here they did not have the listed 'Rib Eye Steak' but the other alternatives were delicious. I wish success to the new owners - they deserve it!

Set in beautiful gardens overlooking the river Torridge with rolling Devonshire hills as a back drop, Yeoldon House Hotel is a small hotel offering first class accommodation. The restaurant, although small, offers cuisine on a parallel with anything seen on Masterchef. The new owners provide a friendly and warm welcome to all and do everything to make your stay memorable.

A total of 18 people stayed at the Yeoldon over the weekend to celebrate my 60th birthday. We had booked the hotel some time ago when it was under a different ownership. We were a little concerned when, close to the date we had booked, we were informed that the hotel had been sold. I needn't have worried. Ilona, the owner of the hotel, together with Gareth her new chef worked together to produce a new and more modern menu and convinced me that everything would be fine. 10 people stayed on the Friday night where we opted to have supper prepared by Gareth - a delicious curry and something he really enjoys creating. On Saturday night we had a more formal dinner and the food was superb. We were certainly not the quietest of guests but because we had the hotel to ourselves for the entire weekend we felt relaxed and able to celebrate in our own particular way. Nothing was too much for the staff who were totally professional throughout. I can't recommend this hotel too highly and particularly if you want a house party to remember this is the place. I am sure that things will only get better when Ilona and John put their mark on it and going forward with Gareth as their head chef I am sure a Michelin Star is not too far away! Many many thanks. Stayed here for one night on business in February. The hotel proprietor had contacted us in advance to let us know that the restaurant shut at 8pm, so as we were arriving late we ate at a local restaurant before checking in. When we finally arrive, we were warmly welcomed and quickly checked in and welcomed to our rooms. The rooms were clean, cosy and comfortable and I enjoyed a nice hot chocolate before having a great night's sleep! Although a bit dated, I liked the feel of the hotel and would happily stay again - especially at such an excellent price.

We stayed at the Yeoldon House Hotel for one night - we were given an upgraded room, no extra charge, with lovely views and balcony. Everything was spotless, we were made to feel so welcome, nothing was too much trouble. Fantastic. the new owners have only been there 6 weeks, so we haven't marked it as excellent as there are a few minor bits to be ironed out. However, we are sure that over the next few weeks this will be a hotel worthy of 5 stars. We would stay again tomorrow. Thank you to the hotel for a lovely stay.

We headed to North Devon for a quick weekend visit to look at properties, and booked the Yeoldon House Hotel due to its good location for our area of interest.

We hadn't stayed before nor were aware when we booked that the hotel had recently been taken over by new owners.

When we arrived mid-afternoon in between property viewings we were greeted warmly, checked in without issue and shown to our room. We were pleased to find that we had been upgraded and the room was very nice - split level with a balcony and view over the hotel's gardens and the estuary beyond. The room itself was well equipped, with a decent telly, hairdryer, ironing board/iron and tea/coffee/spring water facilities. Bathroom was a little bit small, but perfectly formed - a good shower over the bath, and good amenities.

Before heading out again, we had a chat with Ilana and John, who were very friendly while we had some afternoon coffee in the lounge room. This room was very comfortable, with nice leather sofas and a bar, which I eyed up for later.

The following morning we had breakfast in the hotel's restaurant, which is a light room, with views over the estuary. Things here were a little quirky around the edges service-wise - Ilana took my wife's order for breakfast, but then walked off without taking my order, plus a half order of toast that had arrived then turned into a further two seperate orders, one replacing the other as it was warmer. Apparently the toaster was playing up! Breakfast itself was very nice for me, but my wife was somewhat disappointed with her poached egg - rock hard yolk and runny white, which takes some doing.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay. The new owners are very friendly and naturally working hard to get things right. They are almost there, just a few things to tighten up on that will make the 'operation' that much slicker. This small country-style hotel is in a great location for exploring north Devon and we wish Ilana and John all the best to make a success of their new venture.

The hotel has recently changed hands and when went there the new owners had only been there 5 weeks so the likely improvements were going to be service and items that could be done quickly. The important changes were new beds and pillows which were a great success. It was the most comfortable hotel bed we have slept in for years. In the last 18 months we have been traveling for over 12 of them so we have slept well over a hundred hotel beds. The service from Ilana and John and their staff was impeccable and could not be faulted. The hotel is very dog friendly. We don't have one but other guests had a dog who was welcomed with open arms.
We ate at the restaurant one night and the meal was excellent cooked to a high standard and changes were to the menu made to suit our requirements (vegetarian). We look forward to staying at the Yeoldon House again in the near future. It makes a great stopover for anyone going to take a trip to Lundy Island
