“A lovely treat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013 via mobile

We just had dinner at the Pig and loved it - it was recommended to us and we are so glad we booked a table. Unusual foraged local menu, fantastic atmosphere, great bar and lovely shabby chic highly stylised setting.

We had a cocktail in the bar - which is oaky and atmospheric with large leather chairs and cool period features. We then dined in the vintage conservatory - ate some 'piggy bits' followed by superbly cooked main meals (melt in your mouth beef and a pork chop). Great wine list and somewhere a little bit different for food with a creative menu. Looking forward to our next visit - next time we will stay over!

Two course meal, bottle of wine, two cocktails and service approx £100 - perfect treat.

I first visited the Pig in November 2012 and had lunch with my sister.
We loved the building, having known it as the Whitley Ridge prior to the new owners taking over, I was very impressed with the work that had been done.
We had a drink before lunch in the bar, with picky bits, which were fantastic then lunch in the restaurant. The food was very good and reasonably priced for the content and surroundings.
The only thing I feel they have a problem with is the service.
The waiting staff were all young (nothing wrong with that) but although willing, there was an obvious lack of training. A lot of running about that gave you the feeling that there was little structure to the service. Not the fault of the staff but the management.
It did not ruin our lunch at all, we were not in hurry and had a really good lunch.
My second visit to the Pig was for afternoon tea. We arranged to meet a group of friends here to have afternoon tea before going on somewhere else.
I assumed (wrongly) they would do a traditional afternoon tea.
When we arrived they only served cake (choice of two) or sandwiches (not little tea ones but the full blown lunch sandwich or soup) One of our party had the soup which he said was obviously home made and very good, another had the sandwich (of which he said, the filling was good but the bread was stale!) The rest of us just had a piece of cafe. Mine was the Dorest Apple Cake and I loved it!
Service was, as on the previous visit, friendly but very dis-organized
So all in all, not a disaster but a disappointment.
I feel sure that if a traditional afternoon tea was offered, it would be a real hit.
I will go back to the Pig, as the lunch we had in November was lovely.
Hopefully the management will have addressed the service issues by then

We booked a table at the Pig ten weeks ago to celebrate two birthdays in January as there was 4 of us we decided to go early to enjoy a drink in the bar. When we were shown into the resturant we were given a round table surrounded by the bread, sauces etc, We felt that we were in the middle of a roundabout as there were 4 ways our table could be approached. Several times our chairs were knocked by the staff. Our first courses were served quite quickly but the service quickly died and at no point were we asked if everything was alright. My friend and I had the pork chop which mine had a long brown hair underneath it.....My husband did not want me to complain as we were so looking foreward to our evening and it was rapidly becoming well and truly spoilt. The staff appeared to be quite young and inexperienced. Having paid 70 pounds each for this meal we would of expected a much higher standard of food and service. We have been left with bad memories of the Pig and I would certainly not recomend this resturant to anyone paarticulary if you are celebrating a special occasion.

We have been to the Pig many times, but since our last visit, things have changed.

There is still the homely happy feel around the place, but mainly you feel that it is now a well oiled machine rather than the friendly retreat it was when we last went in November. The restaurant/bar in particular now feel devoid of charectars besides the lovely Polish hostess (Barbara) and the South African (?) barman. On previous visits, there were a good few very happy, clever and witty staff, mostly British and french who went out of their way to help us relax. I'm sure other Pig regulars have noticed this... When i asked the straightforward manager he said something muddled about 'people move on'.

What he didn't understand was that this is what we loved most about the place, could they not hire some more charmers? The service seemed fairly regimented and soulless at times, the sommelier had little knowledge of the wine list, and food was slammed down in front of us.

I still love the atmosphere, the food and the location, the reception girls are as delightful as always, and the showers are where i'm happiest!!

Maybe we just had the days when the nice people were off, but couldnt help feeling a little saddened. Hopefully all the staff we loved will appear at the next Pig.

Room Tip: Room 4 has great views.

We recently had lunch at this Hotel, so this is just a review of the restaurant, I will however rate what I saw of the building.
The setting is fabulous, there is ample car parking with a very spacious feel to the approach. Upon arrival we were greeted with a smile and shown to a couple of large comfy sofas in the bar area. The menu was quite varied and would probably have something to satisfy most tastes. The food (and the drinks) were a little pricey though.
We were shown to our table in the airy dining room which has a large number of tables all of different shapes and sizes, none of which have tablecloths . The room is a type of 'orangery' with plants scattered around as you would find in a greenhouse, unfortunately the chairs, which were a varied collection of old conservatory style furniture, would have been more at home there also! They were hideously uncomfortable, anyone with a bad back or similar ailment would be well advised to go elsewhere.
We had the rib of beef for two, which for the money (£55) did not represent great value for money, It was cooked to our liking but was a little tough. There were no plates for the bread, so the table had to suffice, I know that in France that is the custom, but there, a restaurant of this standing would either have linen tablecloths or disposable paper ones.
All things considered, I think that The Pig is more suited to younger diners who might appreciate the Bohemian feel more than I did.

This is a high quality hotel and restaurant in a delightful location in the New Forest. The food was varied and of a high quality. The staff are extremely helpful and courteous. We had Sunday lunch which was superb.

We stayed in a 'snug' room, which was within the main house. The room was wonderful, with so many lovely touches- bath robes, nespresso machine, wonderful 'bramley' toiletries, roberts digital radio, plentiful soft towels... The bed was the biggest I have ever seen, possibly the best night's sleep I've ever had- wonderfully comfy. Monsoon shower was fabulous! The communal areas are great- roaring fires, comfy sofas, magazines and board-games. If you are staying, dining at the restaurant is a must- delicious food & lovely dining room. Have recommended to many friends & hope to stay there again soon!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Pig is the baby sister of Lime Wood – with a little attitude! It is a bang up to date take on a new style of home grown, 26 bedroom country house hotel and what that needs to be today - original, relaxed and sitting comfortably within its environment.......It’s really a restaurant with rooms. This is a place that is all about the walled garden.... everything is driven by the gardener/forager and chef – they grow and find the food – the chef then makes the menu. Our style is home grown in every way – breaking the mold of designed hotels, daring to be comfortable in its own skin, working with what it has and recognising what is good about that. It won’t be perfect, it will be warm, relaxed, comfy, interesting, and homely with muted colours, a bit shabby chic and evolved rather than interior designed. ... more   less
