“Absolutely perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013 for a stay in August 2013

We needed somewhere that was big enough for the whole family to stay, that was also close to the beach and in nice surroundings. We found the perfect place. The house was plenty big enough for all of us and still there was room to spare! The large kitchen table was big enough for us all to eat together and the kitchen was equipped with everything we needed. The house was clean and well laid out. The garden was great for playing games and the views were good too. We had a couple of wet days, so made use of the pool table and table tennis table. (OK, the pool cues could have done with some new tips but that is my only niggle). All the bedrooms were a good size and plenty of en-suites and bathrooms. We didn't need 2 lounges but made use of the sunny conservatory. The location is great - far enough out of Bude centre to have the peace and quiet, but close enough to drive and enjoy the beautiful coast. Ample parking too. Highly recommend this house for large groups

“In need of TLC, but we made the most of it”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2013 for a stay in May 2013

The house is very big giving plenty of room for all 14 of us, the beds are comfy and the large kitchen table makes for great family dining. Close enough to Bude to just pop to the shops yet not too close, loved the views when the weather cleared.
The down sides where that the heating wasn't adequate for the first 3 days and it took 2 phone calls to the owner to sort this out. The sink in one of the bedrooms upstairs en-suite is cracked and chipped. There are plenty of plates, which was a good job because lots of them had chips in them, has had one of the cups and one of the glasses.
There are a lot of windows within the house that have missing window catch locators, which results in drafts, and on the very windy nights this was very breezy, to the point that we had to roll up information brochures and use these to make the windows close tight.
There is only one key for the main doors, so this makes going out interesting if you are all going different places, as you have to plan who has the key, or remember to take the key to the side door.
The cooker is a normal size home cooker, which means you have to juggle what your cooking a little when trying to cook for 14 people.
Trip Advisor states that the house has WiFi, this is not the case, we took a laptop and tablets, and with an IT manger with us we could not find a WiFi signal anywhere in the property, you also get limited 3G signal here as it is in the countryside.
The hall way outside the small sitting room has wall paper that is peeling off by the table football.
There was also concerns expressed over the age of the electrical sockets and if these are up to current standards for rental properties, as one of our party has been involved in building regulations for lots of years and these are 1960's type sockets, although they are fully functioning and do not have any damage, we where very careful what we plugged into these.
All the upstairs bedrooms smell of either damp and have signs of condensation damage on the sloping roofs, this could be down to people not leaving the extractor fans on when using the en-suite's, but along with the cracks in the plaster and missing lumps of plaster, then again basic house keeping and a freshen up is required.
Given these down points, with TLC shown to the property we would all stay here again in a flash. As we all had room to spread out, play games, watch TV, play pool, no queuing for bathrooms.

Management Response
Aug 18, 2013
There is an entirely new air-source heat pump heating system at Thurlibeer House – it took a few stays for us to master the controls and to get the temperature just right, which we have now succeeded in doing!

Two sinks and a WC upstairs have recently been replaced, plates have also been replaced where necessary (all since the review).

Guests are provided with 2 keys to the main doors – there is also a side-door and a door onto the veranda and back garden, for which keys are also supplied.

We have wifi at Thurlibeer House, which guests are welcome to use – details provided on arrival.

The electrics and appliances in the house are tested regularly by our electrician and are in full working order.

The entire upstairs has recently been re-decorated, and some carpets replaced (since this review).
