“Managed to Redeem Itself”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2012

On a lovely sunny Saturday evening, during a short stay in Bude, we strolled through the very charming town and came upon The Brendon Arms. Really well postioned, with great views from the sunny front garden down the river/canal that hallmarks this town, plus the sunset - due in a few hours. We got drinks and decided to have some food. We were tired and hungry after setting off from the East Midlands at 4am, and spending the day fishing in Port Gaverne. As soon as I had queued, ordered, and paid for, our meal (burgers, nothing special) a notice was put up saying there was a 45 minute wait for service. Not happy about this, I said so, but was nonetheless reluctant to cancel and start looking again. I rather hoped they were being over generous in their estimate.
They were not being over generous. In fact, our food eventually arrived an hour later. By this time the sun HAD set, and it was cold in the garden. We had been able to find a table inside and the waitress efficiently told the kitchens of the change, without fuss. After a few more drinks to pass the time we were feeling very tired and hungry, as well as a tad woozy!
However, when the food did finally turn up it really was very good. Given we did have just burgers, we were not expecting anything particularly special but, they were delicious. It is rare to say a plain old burger is very tasty but, this one was. My husband also enjoyed his spicy veg burger. Generous portions, freshly cooked (I should think so!), and quality ingredients. The waitress was very good, even though clearly run off her feet.
I accept the pub was very busy, the tables were constantly full and there must have been a few hundred covers done that night. But, an hours wait, without so much as even a bowl of olives to stave off hunger is a bit much. The meals are not especially cheap, either, so I would think the manager could afford to draft in a few extra hands on busy nights - which, given a sunny Saturday in one of the prime locations in Cornwall could be expected.
All in all, not bad. A traditional inn, with above average food, I have to mark it down for the slow service.
I did offer an apology for my grumpy response to the FOH girl, by the way. It was kindly acknowledged, too!

I stayed for 5 nights in July as a regular customer.
This is a really nice pub and b&b with good sized bedrooms, ensuite and very clean.
The bar is very welcoming and the food in the bar and restaurants serve good food.
The breakfasts in the new breakfast room are excellent and well cooked with a fair choice.
Staff very welcoming and friendly and a really nice place to stay beside the seaside.
Bude is also relaxing and lovely walks locally and fishing in the canal just 1 minute away.
Car park can get busy and sometimes full but there is another car park just a short distance away.
Be sure you know the price you will be charged as it is per person not per room.
Very highly recommended for a traditional holiday in lovely surroundings.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good. At the front a better view.

8 of us ate including 3 children. Mostly a good experience, reasonable choice on the menu staff friendly, the place was packed and seemed very popular. All meals were good except one steak, not cooked quite as required and tough, it was rump though! We were offered a free dessert to compensate. Overall a nice place good food and good atmosphere, prices average.

We booked for 3 nights and was very impressed by our room; wonderful view and great shower. The breakfasts were good enough to last all day and we were impressed that the towels were changed every day. We did have a meal there on our last night, and we did have to wait about 1 hour as they were very busy at 7pm. It was good pub food but the wine was a little expensive. We wouldn't hesitate to go back there as the location was spot on, as was good value for money.

Room Tip: We had front room which had a good view, however on carnival night was slightly noisy from the garde...

We all had a fairly simple option from the menu (pie and chips). The portion was a good size, hot and enjoyable though a little on the expensive size. Had a long wait but the approximate wait time is clearly displayed on the bar. There were plenty of choices on the menu too.

Brendon Arms is a family run Inn. En-suite rooms above a restaurant. Locals were evident which shows the food must be good. We stayed 3 nights and each night thoroughly enjoyed our meal and stay. There is a steep staircase to rooms which may not suit elderly. It is advisable to book evening meals due to the local popularity of the restaurant.

Room Tip: Steep staircase therefore not for infirm

Well, let's start with the location. We stayed in flat 4 which unfortunately basically means you are staying in the pub car park. 1st night was a wedding, so at 2 am we were still kept awake with the music from the pub & rowdy revellers returning to their cars.
Then the Monday & Tuesday, no lie in as they were resurfacing the carpark with heavy plant equipment.
So yes granted these are exceptions, if I'd expected to be staying in a pub car park id expect the noise.
The flats are very very small, although sold on sleeping 2-4 it's really 2. Storage is limited so you have to keep your clothes in kitchen cupboards.
A few more bits would be nice e.g washing machine.
We had a few boiler issues but these were resolved instantly and without fuss.
The location within bude is superb walking distance to the beach, town and superb restaurant of bude. The canal is also great for fishing.

I would recommend again but for a couple without much stuff and don't stay in the front flats, the back 2 are much better
