“Quiet, away from it all break with kids”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

First time in a Forest Cabin and pleasantly surprised by the accommodation. We booked a 3 bedroom Golden Oak for ourselves and 2 grandsons so they decided to be alone in separate rooms - probably a good idea judging by the experience of 4 in one room while travelling there and back. We only went on the Dusk Watch - could not persuade them to do the other Forest Ranger activities - but everyone including the slightly disabled 10 year old enjoyed it although we didn't hear/see many bats. The surroundings were magnificent and the boys spent all their time on site playing with new friends either in the play area or trying to catch the baby fish in the loch or skimming stones. There are lots of things to do around such as the steamer on Loch Katrine, Stirling Castle, Callander Leisure Centre (for swimming). Although the waymarked forest trails were a little difficult for these youngsters, the site is on the line of the old Callander and Oban Railway so flat walking to the north and south. We walked north towards Strathyre village one day (did not get there) and south past the Falls of Leny to Kilmahog (1 mile north of Callander) for ice cream another day. The shop had or could order most things but for meat, fish, vegetables, etc then you need to get these somewhere else. All in all a good place to holiday.

Thank you for your review following your recent break with your grandsons at Strathyre. It sounds as if you had a great time and the boys made the most of the forest’s lochside setting. As you say, there is plenty to do in the nearby area, but often the forest location is all that’s needed, particularly when you are a 10 year old! I hope you’ll return for another holiday together in the future.

Kind regards,
Amanda Clarke

We stayed Mon 23 Sept - Friday 27 Sept in a Silver Birch cabin (no.26) - great view of Loch Lubnaig and mountains. It is a smallish holiday establishment here, and so it was lovely and peaceful - (just what we needed for a relaxing break). The cabins are set a decent distance apart so that you do not feel you are on top of each other. Lots of birds visited the balcony, so be sure to take some bird seed with you if you go. Staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful and Karen, the Manager was great. The cabin was very clean and had everything we needed. The hot tub was fantastic. I notice a few people have mentioned the state of the road, I don't know if some of the holes have been filled in, but we didn't have any problem. We stayed at Nottingham Sherwood Forest Holidays last year and that road was horrendous, nothing like this one, so don't let the road put you off because isn't that bad. We did quite a lot of walking as there are some great walks in this area. Calendar is a pretty place to visit as is Aberfoyle. The Lade Inn at Kilmahog is very cosy and very dog friendly. We've booked again for November.....can't wait.

Room Tip: Pay the extra and book a cabin of choice away from the Reception area - as these cabins are far mor...

Just had a very quiet and relaxing Mon to Fri break at Strathyre. Stayed in a Silver Birch with hot tub and can only compliment Forest on the cleanliness and comfort within the lodge. The kitchen was well equipped and clean (could do with an iron and ironing board), lounge had 2 sofas, small flat screen tv and DVD player and even a game of scrabble which we used. With the bedrooms situated on different levels you even have a certain amount of privacy should there be more than two of you. The main hub of the site, the Forest Retreat had a nice little cafe providing a range of coffees, teas, snacks and home baking with small shop selling basic essentials. Through out our stay the staff were helpful, friendly and courteous. While my partner and I are not really "outdoorsy types" the scenery, tranquility and fresh air were very relaxing and close proximity of Callander (app 4 miles away) offers a range of arts and crafts, tourist attractions and a fine Indian restuarant (Spice Delight) which we sampled on our last night.

We were dubious about what to expect after reading some of the reviews, but we needn't have worried.
The road leading to the Forest cabins was absolutely fine, a wee bit bumpy but way way better than the reviews had described it, we were expecting a mud track, but it was tarmac and pretty smooth except for the odd bump or filled in hole. The cabin was fantastic, so big, clean and beautifully decorated. A very luxurious feel, with a wood burner in the corner, open plan sitting room/kitchen/diner. Good quality solid wood dining table and everything we needed, bar a bottle opener, which we managed to improvise. The bed was comfy, the cabin snug and the hot tub clean and gorgeously warm.
I would like to say a massive thank you to the friendly helpful team at Strathyre, particularly Karen for helping my husband organise a surprise birthday cake and champagne for me, All such lovely people who gave us details of beautiful walks to go on, local pubs (The Lade is a 2 mile walk down /route 7 cycle path towards Callender) and who wished me a happy birthday. We will definitely be back. This was a perfect romantic relaxing getaway for us both.
Thank you so much :)

Room Tip: Don't necessarily pick the cabins nearest the loch, they have limited views, Higher up is bette...

Just home after a lovely weekend away with my husband and 2 daughters. Stayed in a Silver Birch (cabin 9) and it was fantastic!!! The cabin was very clean and comfortable. Plenty of room to relax/cook and eat. Beds were great too and the cabin was nice and warm!!
The hot tub was fab and we spent every evening in there after the girls were in bed :-)
We booked the Junior Ranger activity with Jamie the Forest Ranger which the girls loved and also did the Dusk Watch in the evening. Was good fun and nice to try the Scots Pine tea and the kids enjoyed toasting the marshmallows by the camp fire after the walk.
Staff were all great and Jamie the Forest Ranger was really good with the girls and managed to answer all their questions!!
My daughter wanted to do pony trekking and the staff at Stratheyre were able to recommend Castle Rednock Trekking centre. Would highly recommend the centre. Staff were loely there and very reasonably priced for a family trek.
Hoping to visit Stratheyre again soon!!!

Room Tip: We booked Cabin 9 which wouldn't suit everyone but it is opposite the swing park which the girls...

Stayed here for a 7 night family trip in a 6 berth cabin. The cabins are clean, all the basics supplied including towels and robes, plenty of utensils, pans, plates etc in the kitchen. Our cabin had a bath ensuite and a shower room. The site itself is beautiful. The cabins are well spaced and the balconies overlook Loch Lubnaig. Plenty of walks and activities to do either in the site itself or further a field.

I have only one comment for our cabin (No.20), it was a 6 berth cabin however had a very small sofa and one sitting chair. Had there been 2 adults and 4 kids there still wouldn't have been sitting space for us all, another armchair is definitely needed. It didn't fuss us too much though as we used the dining seating but beware if talking elderly family.
