“Charming rooms with excellent dining”

We stayed at the Monachyle Mhor for two nights. We shared a room with our adult son and friends had another double room. Each room appears to be very different. We had a corner room on the courtyard level with a separate bedroom and a table area while our friends had a upper level room with a wood burning stove and a door out to one of the car park areas.

Both had beautiful bathrooms with lovely amenities, heated slate floors and warm towel racks. The coffee and tea in the room included a thermos of milk which we used when we went hill walking. The plate of shortbreads were delicious. Rooms also included a flat screen tv and a telephone which proved useful because mobile phones lacked reception.

Breakfast and dinner were included and were exquisite. We had pre-dinner drinks in the lounge where Midnight, the hotel's chocolate labrador dog was snoozing. There's a tiny bar where some cold wet campers were warming themselves one evening. The dining room is very poshly decorated.

The dinner menu provides a small but excellent choice of appetizers, starters, main courses and dessert. Breakfast includes choices ranging from porridge, fruit to a full Scottish breakfast. The portions were very manageable. For a rather remote place, the wine list was extensive with a good range of choices.

One day, for an additional charge, we also ordered sandwiches to take on our hill walk, They were made with absolutely delicious bread thickly cut and filled with generous amounts of lettuce, cucumber, tomato, cheese or salmon or ham.

The rooms with breakfast and dinner were £265 per night with an additional charge for the third person we had in our room and at our table.

We could not have asked for a better place to stay and were so glad we did a lot of hill walking to wear off our meals and prepare us for the next. We would highly recommend this hotel.

“Marvellous Monachyle Mhor”

Monachyle Mhor

We received an enthusiastic and friendly welcome on arrival. As it was the start of December and we were arriving on a Sunday, the place was a little quieter than I think they normally are, and so benefited from being upgraded to a suite - this in part to make up for the fact there was no hot water available as both boilers had broken down!
The room was contemporary chic, with high tech facilities and lovely, comfortable furnishings with a wee highland twist - chandelier made from antlers! The bathroom was stunning, with two slipper baths perfectly set for a friendly chat with your partner in the other bath...shame there was no hot water to enjoy it!
The lovely, homely lounge with roaring fire is a real joy - and all the better when served with tea and home made, still hot, scones and homemade jam! What a delight.
BUT la piece de resistance is dinner. In the snug bar before dinner we chatted with chef/proprietor Tom before he went off to the kitchen to cook our magnificent 3 course dinner. The South African waiter kept us going with is dry wit. The only down side to dinner was eating it in the conservatory in December - a bit on the cool side! But otherwise the local produce (venison from their farm, etc.) was cooked to perfection and presented well.
Back to the snug bar to finish off our wine in front of the fire and another chat with Tom who is vivacious and passionate about food. What a delight!

“Rooms with a fire...... What fire?”

Monachyle Mhor

May 19, 2008

We arrived excited and looking forward to spending a night at Monachyle Mhor in one of their 'luxury rooms' , booked especially because of the fire in the room. Reception was empty, we rang the bell and waited.........eventually 2 smiling faces arrived to welcome us. One very pleasant girl showed us to our rooms, nervously she avoided showing us how the fire worked. Twice I asked if the fire worked, and twice she ignored me. Third time lucky. I asked "Does the fire work? " to which I was told "Oh we've been having problems, sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't." We were paying £337 for this room, it was cold outside, it was cold in the bedroom, the windows were open and the radiators weren't on. I told her I wasn't happy so she went and found Michelle who runs the hotel with Tom. I was shocked by Michelles aggresive and rude attitude towards me . We were just about to leave the premises when she brought Tom out who was very helpful and resolved the situation with us. Needless to say the food was very good as was breakfast. The decor in the rooms are a bit odd and I certainly feel the price of £337 for one of the luxury rooms is overpriced. With the staff it is a bit hit and miss. When paying this sort of money you expect great service and attentive staff. The hotel could be very good, it's a great location, and the food is good, but it lacks warmth in more ways than one.

This is the second time we've stayed and felt that things had improved since last time (not that last time was bad). We'd walked in over the mountains from Crianlarich and were muddy and tired. The receptionist was attentive, helpful and quickly go t us to our room where we found a complimentary bottle of fizzy. The room was in the main building and although small was very comfortable and well equipped. The bed was comfortable, the bath big and the room quiet which is all we really need.

Supper was a five course affair and we were grateful that the portions sizes weren't too huge or we might not have got to the end. The cooking was of a high standard, certainly comparable with other restaurants in its class. All very tasty and imaginative dishes with well balanced flavours. Breakfast was perhaps too large but again well cooked and with a great choice.

The staff seemed far more attentive and friendly on this second visit and it would appear that the management have taken note of some earlier criticisms to improve the levels of service. The place is definitely not cheap but the overall experience is well worth having.
