“Good stay, but could be better”

Monachyle Mhor

Apr 3, 2008

Had a nice stay here in March, but it did not live up to my expectations. The staff are pleasant but were not up to the level required for the standard of hotel charging the rates they do. Room was lovely although cold on arrival, it had many nice touches. Food was nice but felt portions small, wine was overpriced on many bottles. Service was the main issue and felt rushed. Breakfast is poor and as with dinner very small portions.

We begun our journey at MM and it took the rest of the week to get over it, and this is why.

This hotel has the monopoly of this beautiful glen and therefore can charge pretty much what they please and they do. $700 ($850 with wine) is an awful lot of money for one night but I reckon it is this high because it is aimed at the honeymoon market, and lets face it when you are on your honeymoon in this beautiful glen, are you not going to think it the best night of your life anyway? and the money!? well parents are paying. Honeymooners are easy customers, they arrive with rose tinted spectacles and leave uncomplaining on the first days of their beautiful life.

For those looking for a luxurious retreat where you are going to experience something extraordinary by way of food and comfort, then this is not the place (but remember there are NO alternatives in the glen). The food was not particularily accomplished and was silly pretentious, served on, much hated by Gordon Ramsay square, triangular, rectangular dishes, it was laughable and the beds are doubled up zipped together singles (mind the gap) and the rooms heating was regulated from central control (with the gas log fires in situ just for effect as they are not even connected to the mains).

Now I am not wanting to entirely criticise this hotel, but when they are bold enough to charge $700 + for a nights dodgy bed, and mediocre food, then those of us looking for a comfortable night whilst not wanting to pay honeymooners prices are going to complain. A stone bath, plasma screen and quirky lamps doesn’t fool those of us looking for comfort in 'a certain style' BUT at an honest price.

Money was not the issue as we booked an expensive hotel, value for money was the issue. 700$ !!!

Our advice! Find somewhere outwith the glen and drive the 8 miles to be there for there for the day, have lunch there, and stroll around.

ps, beware of the extremely dangerous steam jet in the steam room, it could be the difference between a steamy honeymoon and a trip to A&E.

Stayed for 3 nights for a special birthday. Hotel was excellent. We had a luxury room with Italian stone bath, superb rain shower and all the little extras in the room made it even more special. The food was 5 star and wine very reasonably priced. The staff were all young and enthusiastic. For extra treat book a massage!
Overall loved the hotel and will definately return.

We stayed here in February 2008 and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to escape to a quiet country boutique hotel and enjoy delicious food.
Our room was one of the luxury ones, full of quirky and thoughtful touches, a huge bath, L'Occitane toiletries and its own steam room. The complimentary sparkling wine, fruit, fresh coffee and homemade shortbread were great.
We had to turn all the heating on when we arrived as it was quite cold, which could have been done in anticipation of our arrival by staff but it was no trouble. Our evening meal was delicious and the staff were very down to earth and attentive.
When we went to check out after a fantastic breakfast, there was no-one at reception at first and despite ringing the bell we had to wait quite a while for someone to appear. Tom Lewis did stick his head into reception at one point but only said "hello". It would have been nice if he had asked how we had enjoyed our stay but maybe he's just shy! All in all, I would recommend Monachyle Mhor and would definitely go back in the future, we've got to - we promised to take "Midnight" a walk next time!

This is truly fantastic hotel for pure escapism. Its tucked away down a narrow winding road alongside a beautiful loch. The staff are friendly and welcoming and you cannot fault their attention to detail. If the chef isn't in the kitchen creating wonderful 5 course meals he's out chatting to you recommending local places to visit and making sure you're enjoying your stay.

Our room was large, bright, modern but still very cosy, even though we only went for a contemporary room that didn't disappoint. If you're going for a walk be sure to take 'midnight' the back Labrador with you.
