Firstly, let's keep things in perspective. We paid £69 each (booked with easybreaks.com) for a 2 night break which included 2 breakfasts and a 3 course dinner on both nights. In addition they threw in a free pass for 2 for the Callander Highland Games and a program, which would have cost us £14.
For this price, we weren't expecting a lot but were extremely pleasantly surprised. Yes, the hotel needs some serious money spending on it and is very typical of many slightly threadbare Victorian hotels throughout Scotland but, I feel, this often adds to their character. We were lucky enough to get a huge room on the 2nd floor with a great big bay window overlooking the river. Although it needed a lick of paint, the room was kept clean and I could live without a shower for 2 nights. Just take leisurely baths instead.
The food was quite acceptable without being spectacular and the service was invariably very good, both in the restaurant and the bar.
Car parking has been mentioned as a problem by previous reviewers and, indeed, there is only space for about a dozen cars in the hotel grounds. However, there are 2 public car parks within yards of the hotel and, at £2.70 for 24 hours, it hardly breaks the bank.
In short, this was an excellent base for a short break and represented quite superb value for money. Keep your expectations in perspective, remember what you spent and you will not be disappointed. I will return and would recommend others to do the same
