“Great treat every time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

I have stayed with family and friends regularly over the past years and must say it is a great stay every time. Very friendly and efficient staff and the lounges are so comfy that one just wants to stay forever. i also have had just great experiences with the food. So to me one of the best locations around the Edinburgh area for a relaxing stay.

We had afternoon tea in their dramatically decorated drawing room. Huge comfy chairs with an open fire (albeit gas). Sandwiches were delicious, some tasty enough cakes and slices but in Scotland, you really can't get away with poor shortbread! At £14 a head it was a bit steep but fun all the same. Beautiful surroundings with good service. Follow it with a walk by the river or a walk to Bracklinn Falls.

My husband and I took the opportunity of a special offer. On arrival we were warmly greeted by the duty manager and reception staff. We couldn't have been happier with the room we were given (South) although the carpet could have done with a clean but that is a very minor observation. The little touches of quality toiletries, bathrobes, mineral water, sherry and fruit added to the welcome. There was a relaxing atmosphere in the lounge and the opportunity just to enjoy peace and quiet and observe the deer in the grounds. The dining room was elegant and spacious We had taken advantage of the 7 course sampler menu which was beautifully presented. Each course was served on different types of dishes and was a feast to the eyes as well as a treat for the tastebuds. Eating our way through the meal there didn't seem enough to satisfy but there was. The balance of the meal showed the expertise of the chef. We found all the waiting staff very pleasant. Breakfast was served rather than self service and this too made the break more relaxing. We would agree with others that background music could enhance the ambience however it would need to be subtle and unlikely to everyones taste.
If we had read the review from the people who obviously did not have a good experience we would probably not have visited. Thankfully our experience was a good one and going on that we would not hesitate to return but would be disappointed if it was not to the same standard.

Room Tip: South can be recommended

We have stayed at this hotel 5 times now and have not been disappointed on any of our visits. The staff are very attentive and welcoming. The rooms we have stayed in have been spotless and cosy. The dining experience is amazing, Ian McNaught is a fantastic chef. I have twice eaten foods I do not usually like when I have been here and have loved them when he cooks them! We have eaten in Michelin star restaurants and would definitely give this restaurant a star. Possibly something that is missing is the wine pairing with the tasting menu which could make the meal even more enjoyable. Although we cant really fault the hotel we do agree with other reviews that some gentle music in the restaurant and lounges would make a difference as it can be very quiet and you can hear what other people are saying which doesn't create the best atmosphere. I understand that guests have been told the owners wont change the hotel after 22 years however if they would like to attract new guests and keep regular guests returning they really should take note of these comments. The rooms are very warm which can make sleeping slightly uncomfortable and I would suggest turning the radiators down and opening and window upon your arrival. The grounds of the hotel are lovely and very peaceful. The hotel is well positioned in that you feel in the middle of nowhere however are just a few minutes walk from the main street which is nice to walk along and visit some of the pubs/cafes along the way. This hotel is a hidden gem with a great culinary experience which is definitely worth visiting.

We have visited this hotel over the years for lunch and afternoon tea and decided to treat ourselves to a few nights away during mid term break with our 14yr old daughter. We felt we had to write a review as it really was a superb few days of wonderful scenery, luxurious comfort and incredible food.
The period drama character and style of the hotel holds an attraction of its own. Each sitting room has an open coal fire making for a warm and friendly welcome as soon as you walk in.
You are on the bank of the river Teith where fly fishing for salmon and sea trout eagerly awaits you if you feel so inclined.
The highlight of each day has to be our dining experience. The menus and wine list are superb. The creativity, depth of flavour and (in our opinion) Michelin star quality of what Ian McNaught delivers each night is truly fabulous.
The restaurant manager and staff did everything they could to make our stay and enjoyable and memorable as possible.
We will definitely return and would recommend this hotel as the place to stay in Callander.

We a received a gift of a night’s stay and dinner and decided to use it on Valentine’s day. We were disappointed with our superior room; it was quite shabby, the carpet, furniture and light fittings having seen better days. It was clean enough though and there was complimentary water, sherry and fruit.
The ambience in the dining room was nice and the service was excellent. It was a six course dinner and while some of the flavours were not to my taste all the dishes were wonderfully presented. The one thing I found very off-putting was the silence - a little soft background music would make for a more relaxing stay. I am giving a 3 mainly because of the shabbiness of the room and the stilted atmosphere, but the service and standard of food would be a 4/5.

We recently enjoyed a visit to Roman Camp.

Re. the title. It's hard to say what is missing. There's no doubts that the place is stunning and quirky but it lacks something.

The food is amazing, the restaurant manager seems aloof though. We raised a couple of points and he almost disputed them then in front of us. Rude and unprofessional. The other waiting staff were very nice as was the French girl on reception. Sorry, I've forgotten your name.

The maid didn't make our beds, which wasn't great. She didn't even ask if we wanted them done. Out suite was very nice though and had a doorway out to the garden which we enjoyed.

The ambience is perhaps a little awkward, it's SO quiet, which may suit most of the clientèle although it would be nice to perhaps have one room with some classical music or jazz being played at a very low volume. We went straight back to our suite after dinner for drinks as it was not particularly enticing to sit in any of the lounges.

Perhaps the owners pride the place on the above. One member of staff said "you won't change them after 22 years". You can always make places better, sometimes with just an ever so small tweak.

I don't want these comments to seem harsh as it's not intended. The place does have a "wow" factor and we will definitely go back again, and looking forward to it. We will know better what to expect.

You should visit the place and experience it!
