Setting: Family pre Christmas lunch, eating off the Christmas menu, food was pre ordered.
Food Quality: Good in parts: Soup was good, smoked duck was good, but Whitebait salad was dreadful. More breadcrumb than fish, and where was the bed of mixed leaves? The amount of aromat of mayonnaise was for three times the amount of fish. The ravioli was as described, but lacked a sauce.
The main courses were all fine, although some of the roast potatoes were under cooked, despite being burnt on the outside, a neat trick.
The traditional Christmas pudding and cheesecake desserts were good, but the panacotta was a disappointment, served in something that was ill-described as a dark chocolate cup.
The funniest dish was the trio of cheeses, which included a layered cheese, which (in our opinion) should never be seen in a restaurant. No Brie, no Camembert. but Boursin, very ordinary.
So, why the poor rating?
Service. The starters and main courses were both delivered quickly, perhaps a little too quickly, but that's not a criticism. By comparison, the desserts seemed to takes ages.
Of the two servers, one seemed disinterested and the other untrained. The less experienced of the two was a lovely person, but it seemed lacked any training. She stacked the dirty plates on the table in front of one diner, and then left them there while she attended to something else. She brought the coffee over, already poured into oversize cups on saucers, but in order to prevent spillage she clamped the cups to the saucers by placing her thumbs on the rims of the cups, not for one cup, but every cup. All hygiene training lost! I am not blaming her, she seemed to be without formal training, so its the management that are at fault. A little basic knowledge of at least the names of the house wines would not go amiss.
We tried to get a second round of drinks, but despite four of us trying to catch the eye of the serving staff, we had to go to the bar ourselves.
We were told that this was one of the best places to eat in that part of the world, Oh dear!.

Hello XOGM, thank you for taking the time to visit & review us. I will try to address as many of your points as I can starting with our front of house staff. I was surprised to read your comments as we are fortunate to employ a very diverse & capable team who each individually bring great quality to our pub - but yes one or two of them are new to us and I have already set the ball rolling to address the points identified.

Moving onto the food, I have had a long discussion with the kitchen team lead by my husband - currently in December we have served over 300 meals off the christmas party menu all of which have been exceptionally well complimented so to hear you were unhappy is most upsetting.
Had any complaint been raised on the day reference whitebait/salad/potatoes we would have happily addressed them for you as it is our policy to do so without question. Ref the cheese on the dessert; we are a pub in the West Country and proudly so - this is why the 3 counties west country cheddar is on our cheese board. The 'Boursin' was infact a French Roule which has been very popular this christmas.
Overall, In our defence XOGM I would like to stress we are NOT a restaurant we are a country pub. We do our very best to deliver great food, within a warm and friendly environment but we do not charge restaurant prices or advertise that we offer restaurant style services such as table service for drinks - of course we try our very best to, however sometimes it is not possible. We hope that you will visit us again so we can have the opportunity to rectify some of the shortcomings of your last visit. Matt Jo & The Langley Tap Team
