If you are after a beautiful, quiet, discreet, luxurious escape into the English countryside, with greenery as far as the eye can see, then you could hardly do better than Lucknam Park. At least that’s what I’ve concluded, which is why my wife and I now make a habit of visiting the place at least once a year. True, it’s by no means cheap, and the standard rooms are not exactly spacious, but one feels truly privileged to be a guest at such a place and the Michelin-starred restaurant is excellent (albeit some might find it a little intimidating and quiet – although by no means stuffy.) The equestrian centre is classy also, as is the spa; the latter is in the process of being expanded significantly, but the hotel seems to be taking special care not to let it interfere with one's enjoyment. Overall service levels are outstanding, although the hotel’s habit of recruiting very keen young Europeans can give rise to the occasional Python-esque experience.
Don’t come here expecting a swinging time (it represents a retreat, rather than a destination vacation) but if you enjoy a complete absence of tackiness, and a feeling of what it must have been like to own your own country estate a century or so ago, Lucknam Park is certainly worth a stay.
