Wasent going to book , due to renavation building work, checked out hotel website. made no mention of this , !!!, boasted a spa , swimming pool . flat screen tv, lift .. renavated rooms,,, only failed to mention that this was comeing soon, major building work still going on,, work men started some mornings 7.45 am and one night finished at 7.30 pm.. not good for relaxtion, one morning they were drilling directly underneath breakfast area, floor was shakeing.. no more sherry on arrival..
some staff members were fab, others quite rude, we were given breakfast times in a letter to our room ,on first night, went down during allocated time only to be chastised , by a young lady , very rudely. another example, we ordrerd drinks on terrace, my husband informed bartender of our room no, he informed us that we needed to sign docket, we finished our drinks, went in search of bartender no where to be seen, waited 10 minutes, still no sighn, we left to enjoy eve walk , on our return , we were met with a surly bartender makeing us feel like criminals,, not good..we couldent acsess the lower part next to the water due to being roped of, if you check out hotel website your see guests enjoying the waterfount, and table and chairs , no longer there , real shame looking forward to sitting there.
no cushions were put out last two mornings makeing terrace uncomfy..
bar tender was going to charge for milk for room,...
builders cars fill car park during day makeing it difficult to park.
rooms dated but spacoius and clean, very squeaky floor boards.
good housekeeping, although it was hot one night requested a fan for our room , the hotel dose not keep them in stock,,
.this trip was for my husbands 50th birthday wasent bad , but not good either.

“Wait until refurbishment work completed!”

The Avonmouth Hotel

We booked a weekend stay at the Avonmouth, it was a hotel that we had earmarked to stay in for a long time, so was really looking forward to it. The website explains that major works are being carried out at the moment and to expect some noise between monday and friday, as we were going for weekend were not worried by it. The hotel is in an excellent location right on the coast with magnificent views so we booked a room with a water view. The view was all that was promised providing you didnt look down to the massive building site with heavy machinery and rubble that totally filled the grounds at the back of the hotel. The room was a good size (no. 25) with a nice bathroom but so so dated and badly in need of the promised redecoration, bed was quite comfortable but with a tiny tiny portable tv. It certainly wasn`t worth the £158 b&b. I suspect the hotel was a great place to stay 30 years ago but all the furnishings and decor are so tired and worn out . The hotel has a plan of the `new look` once all work completed but no allowance made in the rates for present stays.
There is also no lift which is quite a pain when staying with luggage on the highest most furthest away room in the hotel!
The restaurant was ok, staff were hard working and pleasant, but again felt had stepped into a time warp which would have been wonderful had it have been 1980 but the music and ambience probably only suited to the over 80`s.
Probably won`t stay here again as lots of more reasonabl priced hotels around, but will wait with interest to see how the redevelopment turns out.

“Excellent food - but hotel being renovated”

It's a bit tricky to write a fair review of the Avonmouth since it was in the middle of being renovated when we visited. What I can say is that the dinner was excellent and value for money wise, was probably one of the best meals we have had for some time.

We were given a room in an old lodge part, which I think will be pulled-down as part of the rebuild. It just about did the job, but I would want to go back there.

Although the hotel backs directly onto the sea, the water was far from appetising being full of mud and other suspicious deposits!

The hotel cost us GBP 221 for three people for one night including dinner.

All in all, could be nice when the rebuild is complete. In any case, the dinner is top-rate.

“Beautiful setting, but change is on the way for this lovely hotel”

The Avonmouth Hotel

Having stayed at this hotel for probably more years that I can remember, the changes for me are very sad, to modernise is good, to keep everything fresh and updated, but oh so sad for me to see the demise of the lovely outdoor swimming pool, yes it will be replaced by the modern, sauna & indoor pool etc etc, but for one I shall just miss what to me was a great pleasure in being able to swim in a decent size outdoor swimming pool only to have it replaced by the new Brazzerie.
The loss of the balconies is also a huge loss as I have taken my elderly Mother there on several occasions and she would be quite content on the balcony with tea and biscuits watching the beautifull view. Plus now the ever faithful 'Health & Safety' means the windows will not open more than the allotted 3"!
Well our stay this year was still lovely and we were not particularily inconvenienced by building work, more interested in how little could appear to be accomplised in a day, will they really have it all finished in a year??
Well yes we did stay again and we will stay again, this hotel is in a spot that cannot be rivalled, meals are good - a nice pudding wouldn't go amiss, staff are as ever helpful and you'd go a long way to find an area to beat this one.

“Wonderful weekend”

The Avonmouth Hotel

Jul 30, 2007

My husband and I have just returned from a very pleasant weekend at the Avonmouth Hotel. We booked the room by calling the hotel direct. It was fairly last minute and they offered us 2 rooms and 2 rates, we opted for the sea view and DBB. Cancellation up to 12 noon on the day of arrival. A few days after booking we received a letter informing us that the hotel was undergoing major refurbishment. (weekdays only up to 6pm) The balconies had been removed and the outside pool was no longer available. Their web page does not mention refurbishment and their room page picture shows balconies and outside pool. I telephoned the hotel and expressed my concern, we were going away to celebrate our anniversary and the rates we accepted were faily high (above those quoted on their web page although we accepted these would be for a standard room and we had booked a sea view). The lady I spoke to was firm and detailed in her explanation of what was happening at the hotel and was sure that the refurbishment work would not interfere with the enjoyment of our stay. I was told that if we still had concerns we had the option of cancelling.
Our journey to the hotel was delayed by traffic, we called ahead to ask if we needed to book a table as we could be arriving after 7pm, we were told that the restaurant would be serving until 9.30pm, there was no need to book and if our arrival was delayed beyond that they would ensure a hot meal was available to us. When we arrived we were parked at the front of the hotel, there were plenty of spaces. Entrance to hotel is very nice. We collected our key and went to our first floor room. (no2) The room was large, airy and nicely decorated. There was a seating area, tea/coffee making facilities and a good sized en-suite with bathrobes. Best of all was the view across the bay. Binoculars are provided in the room which was a nice surprise. My husband slipped out to order a bottle of champagne which was delivered to the room within 5mins.
The restaurant again overlooks the bay and is very pleasant. The food was excellent and the service discreet but friendly. The wine was reasonably priced and very good.
Breakfast offered a choice of fresh fruit juices, cereals, fruits, yogurts, pastries, cold meat and several hot choices. The cooked breakfast was one of the best we have had. Again service was very good. There is a bar/lounge area off the restaurant with comfortable seating. A staircase leading from the lounge area took you out onto the lawn which leads down to the waters edge.
The refurbishment did not infringe on our enjoyment at all. There were a few areas to the side of the hotel sectioned off and the outside pool is empty and looking a little sad but with such views over the bay you hardly noticed it.
The only critisism we have is the sound of doors slamming. The heavy springs they have on them means that unless you hold on to the door it slams shut and you can not only hear everyone returning to their room but feel the vibration too. Other people mentioned the floor boards and we were consious of them but it did not bother us so much.
We had a lovely weekend and would return to the hotel again.
I will watch for reviews of the hotel when refurbishment is complete and hope the increased number of guest rooms and facilities does not reduce the good value and service.
