A short break made the more so by the friendly and helpful staff. Early issues with the room were quickly and efficiently resolved satisfactorily.
Excellent service throughout the stay, both with the hotel front desk and the bar and restaurant staff.

What a perfect place to unwind. We came here on a deal and I can say it is one of the most relaxing places I have been to. All of the staff were friendly and made you feel welcome and nothing was too much trouble. We ate in the restaurant on both nights and the food was very good, my highlight was the breakfast which was delicious and I fact was so filling I couldn't eat anything else until evening dinner. We had cycle hire for a day which was booked in advance and everything ran seamlessly. It was a nice touch to be given a card with the picture of the Hotel on. We stayed in a room in the courtyard which was lovely. Will defiantly be returning.

Room Tip: We stayed in the courtyard in room 36, there is no internet connection here though but can be access...

We have never stayed at a place where we have instantly relaxed and we do a lot of travel in the uk and abroad. Our room with the most magnificent wooden four poster took our breath away,I i sent a photo to our son from my phone,he lives on Singapore and would love the place as much as we did. The staff were excellent and nothing was too much trouble.the food was superb, our only regret was that my husband was unwell in the evening and was unable to have the excellent dinner I had. For breakfast as they knew he had been unwell, they made such a fuss of him .we could find no faults and cannot wait to come back,we were only booked for one night so hope to be able to stay for longer.we would recommend anybody to stay here, young or old would love it

Room Tip: There are a variety of rooms to suit all,the ones in the courtyard can cater for families.we would h...

Dear Roamer Trowbridge,
Thanks for taking the time to leave a review on your recent stay with us at the Speech House.
Firstly I hope that your husband has made a full recovery and everything is back on an even keel.
I am delighted to read that you had a great stay and that you enjoyed the fantastic antique 4 poster bed. It is truly amazing and dates back to the 1830's (Not the mattress I hasten to add))
It was also very rewarding to read that our team had looked after you and helped you relax. I have passed on your very kind comments to all of our team.
Thank you once again for leaving such a positive and gracious review and we all look forward to welcoming you both back to the Speech House soon.

This was a length of service treat for my wife which we combined with our wedding anniversary. I am really pleased that I chose this hotel. We stayed in one of the four poster rooms with the help of a very friendly and professional receptionist. She was able to offer a very good package and we thoroughly enjoyed the stay. We found the staff very friendly and the atmosphere informal and relaxed. The food was very well presented and reasonably priced. We both felt very much at home. The building has charm and history in abundance. We would fully recommend this gem.

Room Tip: Four poster rooms 4 or 2.

I pop up to the speech house with my wife quite regularly either for morning coffee and teacakes or for lunch, either a sandwich or a main meal. The staff are always friendly and polite and the food is always very good with a nice choice of specials, the atmosphere is pleasant and inviting and I would recommend it.

We stayed recently as a group of walkers and cyclists on a mid-week break.

Location: Centrally sited right in the heart of the Forest of Dean with easy access to all of the local attractions.

Rooms: All in the main building, nicely appointed, clean and will all the usual facilities.

Food: Breakfast and dinner was taken in the The Verderer's Court which was truly exceptional in terms of variety and quality. Additionally, according to the menu, all food sourced locally, in season and fish caught on line. Good to see this in place.

For the first time, we were even offered a cheese menu for the cheese board which was a nice touch - I can highly recomend the "Firecracker".

Staff: Exceptionally professional, polite and accomodating - a real credit to the hotel

Niggles: Only minor niggle, not hotels fault, but area is a bit of a mobile "black spot" as far a reception is concerned.

Dear Shaun B,
Thank you for taking time to leave a review on your recent stay with us at the Speech House Hotel.
Thank you for your very kind comments regarding the attention and professionalism sown by my team., I have passed them on to every one concerned.
Thank you also for your observations on our food, we have found our cheese and liqueur menu has been very well received.
We are in deed in the very heart of the Royal Forest, central for all activities with walking and cycle trails on the doorstep.
Our location does have one slight drawback in that mobile reception is intermittent despite us having installed booster reception dishes. We are continually lobbying for better signal strength.
We all look forward to welcoming you and your group back, when we hope the River Wye will be at a lower level to allow you to explore the area by canoe.
We all enjoyed looking after your group and we hope you return again.
Best wishes

We booked a courtyard standard double but requested a room away from any events (you can check the hotel website and work out if there is a wedding on!) - on arrival we were given what the receptionist called a superior room in the main house instead (what I gather is a 'cosy double' on the 'rooms' section of the website) and this was indeed about as far away as you could get from the wedding marquee. We could still hear a little noise on the Saturday night but only just and the music stops at midnight sharp. The room itself was clean, spacious enough and had a bathtub. There was a bit of a view but the window was too high to get much enjoyment from it and this made the room a little dark (but then we were in the eaves so..). The main road out front is quite noisy in the day but quiet at night. The staff were very helpful - we had taken rather expensive mountain bikes and the staff offered a couple of areas where they could be securely locked in. The location is great - you can join the family cycle trail just down the road and that's just a couple of minutes from the main Cannop Cycle Centre where you can join the other more challenging trails. We ate in the Orangery on the Friday evening - food was delicious, reasonably priced and the service was excellent. Breakfast was fine - usual fare - cooked items were kept nice and hot and there was a selection of cereals, fruit and pastries - perfectly adequate but room for improvement if the hotel want to be known for a good slap up breakfast! All in all very happy with Speech House and would stay there again.

Room Tip: If you aren't with a wedding party and don't want to be disturbed then do request a quiet ro...
