“Lovely cream tea”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

We live locally, so just popped in on Sunday afternoon for a cup of tea after a walk in the Forest! Our previous visit was probably 12 years earlier, and we were very impressed with the improvements which have been made. The Orangery is a lovely place to eat, and we had a scrumptious cream tea, with lovely warm scones. They seemed to be freshly baked, not microwaved as they so often are!

Dear Brenda B,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review on your recent visit to the Speech House for your cream tea.
I was delighted to learn that you enjoyed both the Orangery and the cream tea.
The Scones are indeed freshly prepared and i have to agree delicous.
I hope that you will now visit us on a regular basis and not leave it 12 years until you return.

We have just had a Saturday night stay in the Speech House Hotel in the heart of the Forest of Dean and the whole experience was excellent. From the moment we entered the impressive hotel entrance the service level from the staff was superb. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff in Reception, the Bar and the Verderer's Restaurant. The food was magnificent (I had the pan seared venison and my wife had the pan seared fillet of salmon) and the Verderer's restaurant is a historical experience in it's own right.
The room we had was in the main building and was impressively clean and exceptionally comfortable.
Having the magical beauty of the Forest of Dean immediately outside the front door, and having stayed in this truly exceptional hotel, made it an experience we will never forget.

We arrived about 5 pm and we were pleasantly surprised to find that we had been upgraded from a courtyard room to a room in the main house. The room on the top floor was very clean and comfortable. We ate in the orangary and the food was excellent, served by very friendly and helpful staff. On checking out we were invited by Peter to have a potted history of the Verderers room, which was very interesting and informative. We would love to come back for another stay, hopefully after the main pictures in the Verderers room have been cleaned and restored.

This hotel is in the middle of the forest of dean with great access to visit attractions, I have stopped here numerous times and I love it hear, watch out for the ghosts though!
The cottages are nice too in the courtyard especially if you have children.
Ronald sadly no longer works here but was a fantastic member of staff who was always funny, witty and friendly.
the food is nice and I love the breakfast at this hotel, its very dark at night here and quiet. Most mobiles find it difficult to get a signal from here.

Room Tip: four poster rooms are nice but expensive court yard rooms are small

Stayed here on the bank holiday weekend and took our dog with us. No problems here at all, dog allowed almost everywhere and he was allowed to stay in the room without us which was good.

We were put in one of the courtyard rooms. Very basic and tired looking fittings and fixtures (stains on carpet, walls, in the sink etc) but overall clean and comfortable. Very thin walls in room, could hear everything from next door and upstairs but not a bad night sleep.

We ate in the orangerie which was lovely. Prices are not cheap (£6 for starter) but the food really was lovely.

The hotel is located in the middle of the forest and is perfect for walking. We left the car in the car park and didn't need to use it until we left. Really great walks in the area, nice for older walkers and children as well.

Average stay overall but lovely food and very easy with the dog. Don't expect luxury but a cheerful place in a great location.

Dear Venus000,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review on your recent stay at The Speech House.
Firstly I was delighted to read that you had a good stay with us and that you had no problems with bringing your dog and letting her stay in your room.
Since taking over the hotel we have carried out a major refurbishment of the Main house and are now starting an ongoing programme with the Courtyard rooms.
I was delighted to read that you ate in the Orangery,(dog friendly) and that you found the food to be of high quality. Our starters actually start from £4.50 and not £6.00 as quoted.
Yes the hotel lies at the heart of The Royal Forest with approximately 253 miles of walking and cycling trails, as you say is ideal for people of all ages with many flat trails through the woods.
I am glad that you found your overall stay enjoyable and also that your dog had a good time too.
We look forward to welcoming you back to the Speech House in the future, perhaps next time try one of our Royal Courtyard rooms.
Thank you once again for staying with us and taking time to leave us feedback on your stay.
Best wishes

Recently we arranged a surprise birthday lunch for my wife at the Speech House. It required quite a lot of planning and scheming to ensure it remained a "secret" until the last minute. The staff were so good to work with, well organised and flexible with regard to arrangements. We had exclusive use of a separate dining room which they decorated beforehand.
On the day the food and service were excellent. The staff were relaxed and nothing was too much trouble. As a result a great time was had by all.

Stayed here with a group of friends in my wlaking group on an excellent value two night package.
Amazingly for this group, no-one had any complaints, which must be a first! We were particularly impressed with the quality of the food (the package included two dinners, both of which were of a high standard) and the friendly and efficient service. The hotel oozes character and is in a suberb setting in the heart of the Forest of Dean. My only suggestion to the magaement would be to get rid of the tired looking carperting in some of the communal areas.

Dear Weekendwalker061,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review on your recent stay at the Speech House.
I was delighted to learn that you thought our two day package was excellent value.
The fedback from your walking group upon their departure was extremely positive.
It was great to know that our team met and exceeded your expectations and that you found the food at the hotel during your stay to be of a very high standard.
I was a little perplexed as to your feedback on the carpets in the communal areas as they are "Wiltons" top range commercial weave made especially for the hotel and are only 4 years old. That said I will look at them again to ensure they are in good condition.
Yes indeed the Speech House is in a superb setting at the heart of the Royal Forest of Dean and it does indeed ooze character and history, It is our dedicated team of local staff that add a large part of the charm.
Once again I am delighted that you all enjoyed your short break and we look forward to you and your group returning to explore more of the Royal Forest in the Future.
Best wishes
