My partner and I stayed at The Speech House for two nights in December for a family party. Our room ('Cosy Double' in the picture gallery) and bathroom were very clean, the bed/mattress extremely comfortable; I would describe the room as fairly standard. Service was excellent; the staff were friendly, helpful and very also knowledgable about the fascinating history of this very old building. We had two meals, all fish dishes. The first, plaice, was delicious, although the vegetables were a little too al dented for our liking. The second meal, haddock, was not so good - the fish was very dry but the vegetables were just right.
The building is very old - the floors are creaky and a little uneven in places. The stairs to the second floor were quite steep and somewhat narrow and there is no lift. The age of the main building has to be taken into account but it would benefit from some upgrading and redecoration in parts. The Orangery (for drinks and light meals/snacks) is very attractive and I think would be lovely in summer. Friends stayed in one of the 'motel' type rooms attached to the main building and described it as standard.
Unfortunately, it rained heavily for most of our stay but I think it would be a lovely location in better weather.
