Owner description: Puzzlewood - A Magical Day Out in the Forest of DeanWhy is Puzzlewood magical? Is it the maze of pathways winding through deep gulleys of moss covered rocks, the twisted roots of the Yew trees or the bridges, ‘lookouts’ and features to find on your way round? Puzzlewood is enchanting; it has an atmosphere quite unlike any other woodland. Here you can imagine that you are in a fantasy film, and that fantastic creatures lurk round every corner. Puzzlewood is used for Merlin, Dr Who and recently for a new Warner Bros movie called Jack the Giant Killer (release date June 2012).Also onsite are farm animals, willow maze, indoor maze, playground, picnic tables, café and gift shop

“Great day for all ages”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2013

We came here a couple of years ago with our son and enjoyed the day - it was the middle of summer and nice and warm.

We now have a daughter and trying to find activities which keep a toddler and an older one amused is very difficult but we found just that here.

It was a cold day but we stayed here for hours.

The woods are magical and the paths running through are exciting with stepping stones, bridges and look out points.

As well as the ancient woodlands you also have a great park and play areas.

We ate in the cafe - the children had the lunchbox and we shared a panini - all was delicious and well priced.

Fantastic fun - we hope to stay in the cottages one day too!

One thing though - the trails are not suitable for pushchairs so if you have slings etc make sure to bring those.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

I have taken my children to Puzzlewood many times and at different times of year, the wood changes with the seasons and is beautiful whatever the weather, wellies and coats in wet weather, scarves and hats in cold weather, shorts and t.shirts in summer, the children are safe and can have the experience of exploring in a safe environement. This place is truely awesome with sheets of bluebells in the spring, and the strong smell of wild garlic. I cannot recommend this little place highly enough, not suitable for babies or pushchairs in the actual woods but very littlies can feed the farm animals and if there are 2 adults one can take older children into the woods whilst little ones enjoyed the animals. Nice little cafe on site serving drinks with cakes, some sandwiches ice creams etc. Plenty of free parking.

The grandchildren loved the maze of paths amongst rocks and trees - a bit Tolkein-like. The cafe was barely that but you can take your own food as long as you take your litter home. A fairly good playground, a small indoor maze and a few animals helped make the attraction goof for younger children.
It could be combined with a visit to Clearwell Caves for a full day.

“Why pay?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013 via mobile

Yes, 'Puzzlewood' has fantastic scenery, but we were disappointed with our trip overall. Why bother paying an overpriced entrance fee to Puzzlewood, where the 'paths' are poorly-maintained mud tracks, even after a week of hot, dry weather. Where there are so many other visitors that the chance of enjoying the 'peaceful' scenery are slim. And don't bother trying to get a photo, unless you want to remember all those other visitors. The cafe did not have much choice, and few seats. In the woodland itself there are so many wooden rails and fences that it becomes far less natural. Maybe it would be worth paying for, if it was not available for free, quieter, more natural and in the same woodland! Puzzlewood is only a part of the Lambsquay Wood, which has public footpaths running through it. For a quieter, more authentic woodland experience, you would be far better off ditching the commercialism and exploring there.

“Brilliant place to explore”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

Absolutely fabulous to explore and run around - wear sensible shoes though, it can get very muddy. Kids will definitely recognise various parts from TV programmes
