“Faulty towers on Crack”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

Generally clean and tidy with helpful staff. Was unimpressed with the daily £10 parking charge and the rooms vary greatly my friends rooms at the same room seemed far superior. The food was of a good high standard and recommend the haddock for breakfast.

However I was disappointed I didn't catch Basil and Manual smuggling a body across the lobby...

Great location, tight car park. We did not have a space so was kindly shown some on road parking about 10 mins away. Our room was old fashioned, old style Tv, remote control kept falling apart and the batteries fell out. Blanket and sheet, no duvet. Mattress and pillows quite uncomfortable. Bathroom could have been cleaner..hairs in bath. Communal areas downstairs good, but on the stairs and in the hallways were buckets to catch the water from leaks. One bucket was quite full and didn't seem to have been emptied recently. Staff very nice and food, both breakfast and dinner excellent. Needs a revamp upstairs!

Like some aged rock star, the Fowey Hotel has seen better days and trades off its beautiful views and location. The breakfast was great and varied and the staff highly attentive and friendly. But carpets and decor are dated, and the abthroom with its typical English plumbing habits of freezing and roasting you in the shower don't pass muster for the price. None of this should put you off, but for the same money I'd probably pick the bijoux Old Quay House. Come on Fowey Hotel you can do better!

Room Tip: Sea views cost even more, but why are you staying there?

A wonderful hotel. All of the staff were very friendly and nothing seemed to be to much trouble and that was demonstrated by the efficient way they went about their duties. The food was excellant, and presented in an attractive manner. Our room was large, very comfortable and furnished very nicely. The view from the hotel over the bay of the river by day was breathtaking but by night with the lights of Polruan twinkling across the water was just magical. It is a hotel that will be visited again.

Room Tip: Corner suites are large and sunny.

A wonderful hotel! We were proberly the youngest couple staying but were still treated very very well. Only ate there for breakfast but totally first class! We had a wonderful room with the only problem being a noisy radiator! Were upgraded to another room strait away! And if any reading this has a love for a night cap brandy, the xo is something special! Rosie and Jim.

I read the reviews after we had booked and was apprehensive about our stay, but overall, I have good memories.

The Good:
- the staff is friendly
- the food (dinner & breakfast) is very good.
- you can pay for parking right outside the hotel (that is difficult to navigate, but the nature of the town. Our space was taken by someone else on arrival, but it was quickly remedied)
- views from room were lovely (if you book a view room)
- views from hotel are lovely and great location perched above town.

The not so good:
- room and common areas need updating. Specifically, the carpet in the room is worn. As a previous reviewer stated, there are areas of wallpaper that you can see peeling (like in stairwell)
- mold on the bathroom ceiling, and a little bit in the tiles
- lack of attention to details- for example, the mattress box spring is not covered/skirted, just exposed.
- no wi-fi on the third floor. Strongest signal in the bar and lounge downstairs.
- feels old, not in the good way
- gardens could use more maintenance

Overall, we did enjoy our stay, as Fowey is a lovely little town. Waking up to the beautiful views, with good food and friendly service helped to outweigh the faded hotel. With some updating this hotel could be top notch, but right now, unfortunately, I have to agree with previous reviewers that it needs help.

If you don't mind spending the money and go with lowered expectations as we did, then you may not be disappointed. But, if you are one that pays attention to details and go expecting perfection, then you may be disappointed. Or, if you consider this a splurge, you may be disappointed. But it was, overall, still a pleasant holiday.

Charming "old fashioned" hotel with attentive, friendly staff. Food was excellent and timely. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble. We had a room with a view - always something happening on the Fowey River. It would be a shame to stay here without a view! The bedroom was small with sheets and blankets - not duvets. The bathroom had recently been reburbished with an excellent shower over the bath. The public rooms and bedrooms were a little faded but this all added to the charm - as did the gated lift! The free mini cream tea provided was as good as any cream tea anywhere in Cornwall. We found the whole experience very relaxing and will be going again in the future

Room Tip: Front facing - go for the view
