First hint of problems was the poor service. Menu practically thrown at us then we were ignored for quite some time. Was somewhat confused to see a 'buffet' offer (evening meal) yet no buffet table or food in sight. To us, that meant choose a selection of food from hot plates in the restaurant. Not so - when the waitress eventually turned up (hardly speaking any English) we eventually worked out that she was telling us that we had to choose the buffet option and they would bring us the selection of food we suggested from the list provided - but having seen the tiny dishes others tables were getting we could see who benefited from this suggestion! So we chose a selection of main meals (at much greater cost but we expected larger portions for a main meal choice) from the menu.
The waitress wasn't having this and went off to speak to a colleague who came and actually demanded to know why we were not having the 'buffet' option. We stuck to our guns and had the worst meal we have ever eaten in a Chinese restaurant. Who is to say if it would have been better if we had chosen the buffet........could this have been a punishment!
The chicken and sweetcorn soup had been passed by a chicken and stayed for a longer visit with the kettle. The (small saucer of) chicken and cashew nuts was a few pieces of over cooked and dried out chicken, with some sort of bland and generic sauce poured over it - the meat had not been cooked in it. Ditto the (tiny portion of) beef in black bean sauce - just poured over the meat and literally sitting congealing on top of it. Two miserly portions of rice - and the whole atmosphere cold and unpleasant. It was really obvious who were regulars here (why would they .....) as they were the only customers the staff would condescend to talk to. We finished the meal with jasmine tea for two - and again - the minimum amount of tea leaves were drowning in very strange tasting water (to be fair, all the water in Grantown is over chlorinated - be prepared). It was awful, parsimonious, and very much in line with the whole meal.
At the end another shock - perhaps we missed this on the menu - but having presented a credit card we were told they took cash only. In this day and age! We were told we could go along the road to the bank to get cash at the cash point. We paid up and left - wondering just how desperate locals must be to keep this place in business.
