“Good value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2009

My husband and I stayed at the Craiglynne for a 2 night weekend break in July and had a good experience of this hotel. Overall, the hotel is nice with very pleasant and friendly staff and is in a good location with a pleasant outlook to the front of the hotel and well tended gardens to the front that also offer outdoor seating opportunities.
However, we did feel that there were small things that could have been improved at the hotel - for example, the state of the paintwork on the outside of the windows.
Rooms are a good size and beds very comfortable. Food is also reasonable - breakfast offered standard choices of cereal, fruit, toast and hot items too, evening meals are popular and offer a good choice.
All in all, a good choice for the area, easy to find and ample parking offered for guests.

After reading reviews on this hotel after having booked a two night stay i cannot say i was looking forward to staying there, however i was very surprised to find a lovely hotel which i know i will stay in again and recommend to friends and family. The lobby was cosy as was the bar just next door which we had a fair few drinks in each night.
We booked two rooms, two people per room and had the option at looking at two double rooms and two twin rooms, we went for the twins as they were slightly larger and in the main part of the hotel. All four rooms we saw were very well decorated and comfy. The bathrooms were fine although in the morning my shower was only luke warm.
The hotel is made up of four large houses and is quite old, this would account for the floors being creaky but honeslty what do you expect from an old hotel? I cannot see how this can be fixed very easily and to tell the truth it wasn't even a problem for us.
The food was adequate and not the best i have ever tasted but was fine all the same.
We would definately stay again and will even go back to have a look at having our wedding there in two years time.

This is the place you come to die, Walking into the hotel was like a scene from 1980's film "day of the dead" full of old people, drippling their worrys away. The room the size of most lifts with a tiny single bed, Sink in the room, and a makeshift shower and toilet in the cupboard. The staff, well they were okay.. we got booked in, but wernt asked if we had a pleasant night, I expect this was because they would of known the answer. breakfast was what i'm calling an Oliver Twist breakfast.. yes you guessed it "please sir can i have somemore" 1xbacon 1x sausage, one egg, and toast.... Perhaps they have found that the old don't tend to eat much for breakfast.. Looking at the ceailing there were signs of leaking, and buckets placed in areas to catch the drips, I joked that perhaps it was a bed wetter, its such a shame that this hotel seems to look so great on the outside, other than the wood cladding "school cantin" style bit in the middle, which bridges the 2 buidings together. We were all glad to leave without turning into a zombies, the P hanging of the "Private" door made my mind up that this is and was faulty towers.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on our hotel, all comments and remarks made by our guests are greatly appreciated.
It is unfortunate however, that you feel our hotel a little tired and our clientele likewise, we would never wish to discriminate against any potential guest by requesting their age at time of booking, but can assure you we have a variety of guests of all ages and from several countries whom return to us again and again.
We have various size rooms within our hotel and many do still have a wash hand basin within the bedroom, this is often mentioned as a quaint characteristic of our building.

I was very surprised that you mentioned our breakfasts were of a poor helping, our Chef takes care and pride in offering several options for breakfast to cater for all appetites and tastes, including cereals, porridge, fruit and yogurts for starter followed by the traditional full Scottish, a light option of ham, cheese and tomato’s, with kippers and poached eggs available too, or you can request to design your own, with tea, coffee and toast refilled upon request.

You are correct in your comment with regards the small leak in our restaurant, unfortunately due to the age of the Craiglynne and the resent unexpected rain, we did encounter a leak that was undergoing repair during your stay, please be assured that this is being attended to and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Thank you for your feedback as this is vital to us, if we are to improved and monitor areas of our operation that may otherwise be letting us and or our guests down.

Kindest regards
Chrissie Harrison

God this place was like an Old People's Home ! and I have never heard creaky floors like it in my life. Woken at 6am both mornings by people walking on floor above our heads. The food was mediocre, luckily we were only eating breakfast there but we had relatives staying too who had booked in for dinner and the meals most of the time were inedible. The staff were doing their best and were friendly. Our room was tiny , once we were in it with our bags it was pretty cramped. The decor had seen better days and we were also right above the kitchen which was pretty noisy when the window was open. We have booked Easy Breaks before and struck it lucky with great value nice places but this was a big let-down. On a more positive note we ate at the bistro in the Ben More Hotel on main street and that was nice food and we had a gorgeous dinner on the second night at Mountview Hotel in nearby Nethybridge.
All in all we would never return here, Cannot understand all the positive reviews - did they not eat the breakfast or are they just very easily pleased?

Dear Sir/Madam

thankyou for taking the time to post your review on our hotel.
we were dissapointed to read your comments raised on our hotel during your stay could i start by mentioning our hotel recieved a recent upgrade to all our bedrooms and public areas to a very high standard. unfortunatley due to the hotel being the victorian building without causing major structural changes there are some areas that may have squeaking floor boards.
with regards to the size of your room our rooms are highly scrutinised by both the A.A and Visit Scotland inspectors and fall in the criteria for a top end 3 star hotel.
Our Breakfast menu has recently been changed and has some great dishes for the guest to sample we offer hot and cold options as well as a lighter option which i feel suffices. with regards to the dinner comment I feel you have no justification as you have not eaten dinner in the hotel. we do offer a varied table d'hote menu using locally sourced ingredients in scottish menu's. we also offer a full a' la carte which gives the guest an oppurtunity to upgrade to hand dived king scallops, west coast mussells, and prime scottish fillet.
we appreciate all comments made as these are invaluable to the running and progress of our establishment

your sincerely

Graeme Miller

This is perhaps the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. When we entered the lobby the first evening the lights were so bright we thought they were shooting a movie. Perhaps a dimmer is in order. The staff was neither friendly or helpful. Our double room was so small that I felt as if we were in a closet. I'm only 5'7, but my feet still hung off the bed. The toilet didn't flush and it took forever for the sink to empty. Please do yourself a favor and choose another place to stay even if it is your car!

I was so depressed when I saw the room (read: closet ) that I grabbed the room's writing implement, which was a representative unsharpened pencil, apropos of the entire stay at this overpriced, dirty, inconveniently laid out horror of a lodging. We should have known from the hideous decor and un-vacuumed lobby, what lay ahead. An 82 room hotel without a luggage cart and any staff on board to assist us when we arrived at 10:00PM. After struggling up to our rooms, we found there not enough room to stow a golf bag. I had to clear a desk just to have space to open a suitcase, and be able to move around the room. Add in a tiny 22" square shower with an open top to the plumbing and unfinished floor above, and an opening next to it that was equally unfinished and filthy. There was an added soap dish conveniently located so that if you wanted to wash your legs, you would smack your head into it, or scrape your shoulders. The electrically operated shower didn't turn off after the 2nd time I used it--I had to go outside the bathroom to kill the circuit. The toilet wasn't in working condition. No waste basket in Bathroom. A 13" old style TV in room WITHOUT a remote control. Tasteless breakfast with watery porridge, canned fruit and cheap standard cereals. Did I mention how unhelpful the staff was? The single bed was 33" wide, remarkably short, and equally uncomfortable! The bedding was cheap polyester, with equally cheap old style foam pillows. No clock--no in-room radio to wake us, confusing room direction signs (how could you put up a sign that said our room was in two different directions?), a tiny bargain basement bar of soap, no shampoo, lotion, conditioner, not a box of tissues.. Barely enough water pressure to clean the soap off with. I felt like a cast member of "Survivor". I could go on, but it's not worth the effort--just don't go there.
