The hotel is immaculate and spotlessly clean. One is slightly afraid of making a mess. The food is very good and nicely presented and our room was very comfortable and well appointed. Overall, however, we did not feel Culdearn offered particularly good value for money. £85 pppn for DBB might be just about OK in the high season, but not mid-week in October. £65 to £70 would be nearer the mark. By comparison, we also stayed one night at the Macdonald Pittodrie House, which was as good and better in some respects, for £66.50 pppn. Be aware that the booking conditions at Culdearn are quite stringent. They take a £50 or £100 non-refundable deposit, and only confirm the booking after they have charged your card. It seems they may not accept cancellations within 14 days of the booking, most hotels accept cancellations 24 or 48 hours before, some even less. We were informed that bad weather is not an excuse for cancellation.
The proprietrix is rather cool and somewhat aloof. The proprietor on the other hand is very affable, and his nonchalant almost “happy go lucky” manner is a foil for the Mistress of the House. There are quite a lot of rules and regulations at Culdearn.
