Went to Thurne Lion for Easter meal, 8 persons made up of 6 on a boat and my wife and myself driving from nearby home.
Arrived at 12 noon. Went into public bar as we had a Labrador pup which was too young to leave alone on the boat. Very dog friendly, bowl of water was available. No problem with other dogs in the bar.
Food was very good, ample portions and well cooked. Fish and chips lovely, most of us had the steak and kidney suet puddings and vegetables, some had chips, I had the mashed potato
and it definitely was not powdered mash from a packet. Portions so large none of us needed a dessert.
The wine was excellent, but the beer very disappointing. This is the first time I have had bad beer at The Lion, and I have been going on and off for 44 years.
To be blunt, the Old Speckled Hen would have gone well with chips. My son and I are both real ale drinkers, and the glasses never reached our lips, the smell was so bad.
It was quickly changed for another pint of another beer, which was almost as bad. We left it untouched on the table as a message when we left. It was as if there had been an outbreak of vinegar bacillus in the cellar. The Landlord was apologetic and knocked the cost off the bill.
We had good service and all staff were very friendly.
With my son and family members having come a long way to visit, we asked if we could leave the car in the car park while we went for a cruise up the river with them, this was not a problem at all.
Would we go again? Yes, but test the beer in a small glass first. Otherwise have to drink Lager.
