I had seen this restaurant when passing through and thought it looked like my kind of place so I decided to pop in and check it out. I couldn't have been made more welcome and decided instantly that this is a place I want to come back to. My husband and I took the train, after an aborted road journey, due to the snow on the 'tops' on the Pennines. To be honest, it was so cold, wet and windy I almost gave up. But not hubby, who is made of sterner stuff! It was more than worth the effort. Again, the staff couldn't have been more accommodating, putting our wet stuff on radiators to dry out.
The ambience in the restaurant is relaxed but at the same time classy, candles and nice table linen. We had mulled wine and cider, perfect to warm us through and then we both ate off the special menu £16 two courses or £20 for 3 (I think). The smoked chowder was unbelievably good, followed by a pork, pancetta and chestnut stew. Again delightful. We even had dessert, which is most unlike us! I had a Raspberry posset and my husband asked for cheese, which wasn't on the special menu, but there wasn't a problem (not sure if we paid extra). The whole evening was well worth the money. On leaving we were presented with some home made truffles to take home as a thank you for making the effort. Such a lovely thing to do, and we're so glad we did. We'll be back!
