We stayed at the Newtown House Hotel for one night on the 14th February for valentines day and also had the 3 course valentines day meal in the restaurant. I booked it several weeks in advance through Booking.com, had the confirmation and was ready to go. A week before the visit the hotel rang to confirm our booking for the meal and ask for a £20 deposit. No problem. Then a few days before the trip they rang to ask if I had received the pre-order menu. I hadn't. They e-mailed it over and asked me to return it with our choices ASAP. Fair enough, but I then had to run through the choices with my wife which would have spoilt any surprise of a surprise trip had I been planning it as such. I hadn't, she knew. The room we had was clean, spacious and accommodating. After a quick search we found the tea and coffee making facilities hiding in the wardrobe, sneaky little tykes!
The Valentines meal was lovely. All three courses were absolutely delicious and a bargain at £25 a head with a bottle of wine thrown in. An eatery near to where we live would charge you close to that for the main course alone (we had the beef fillet-perfectly cooked). However the organisation around it could do with a bit of attention. We had gone into the bar beforehand and my wife had a glass of wine from the bottle that came with the meal. Going through we collected the bottle and bought it in with us where the waiter put it into an ice bucket. So far so good. We nibbled on the fresh bread (nice) and then the starters arrived. I wasn't drinking the wine but wasn't offered a drink, nor were we offered any water. We finished the starters and within moments the mains arrived. A bit quick but hey ho. At this point I had to ask another waiter for a drink. We finished the mains and again within moments the puddings arrived. We had to pause for a bit to let the mains go down. Nobody should be expected to digest food that quick! I also noticed that another couple had their mains bought out whilst they were still having their starters (they didn't look impressed). I thought the quick service was because of a second sitting but another couple finished and the waiter cleared their table completely without re-laying it. For what was meant to be a romantic meal the whole occasion was very rushed. I got the bill then had to wait a little while for the waitress to return so I could pay it. This meant going through to the bar as the card machine does not get a signal in the restaurant. What happens when the bar is busy and the eaters have to queue up there to pay?
The overnight stay was fine except for the room temperature (required opening the windows in February and letting the road noise in) and the outside ground lights pointing directly at our window. The curtains were thick enough but try as you might you couldn't block all the orangey glow out. The bathroom facilities were very good apart from the height of the shower head which seemed to be fixed a little too low. I'm 5'10" and had to crouch a bit. God help any six footers! The breakfast, like the meal the night before, was outstanding and not rushed. its not often you get black pudding and fried bread on a full English nowadays and the lady serving us was lovely. All in all we enjoyed our stay and had very few niggles, apart from the ones previously mentioned. The staff were friendly and helpful, the décor was lovely and clean and the whole place had a nice atmosphere to it. i can imagine it being a popular xmas hotel, especially if the fires get lit! If we visit Hayling Island again we would probably stay at the Newtown House Hotel
